I've never used this brand before. Curious if anyone else has, for pizza sauce.

On a related note, I really need to pull out the Gozney again!

  • +2

    Can’t find the expiry date?
I usually use Mutti san marzano for my pizza sauce so curious how this brand compares.

  • +2

Doesn't look like these are of legit San Marzano origin, just Italian.

    • Good luck in finding San Marzano peeled tomatoes grown in San Marzano

  • +2

Only 60% tomatoes. The rest is juice

    • No deal then

    • This is a juciy detail!

    • wait what % of tomatoes is good for canned whole peeled tomatoes?

      • -3

Mutti is the only commonly accessible brand I know of that only contains tomatoes (so 99%+)

        • +1

Are you referring to Finely Chopped version? I don't think that's a fair comparison. Tomatoes naturally contain liquid/juice so when finelly chopped it really is combination of both the "meat" and the juice.

The equivalent comparison would be the Whole Peeled version which also contains tomato juice though interestingly they don't mention the proportion.

I mean if you want 99% of tomatoes in whole peeled canned version, do you expect to open the can and just get 3-4 pieces of whole dry tomatoes?

          • @foxes28: You're right, I got confused with the chopped version.

That being said, the Mutti whole peeled version is pretty much as close as you can get to 3-4 pieces of whole (not dry) tomatoes in a can.

    • Costco kirkland san marzano whole tomoatoes 800g tin is good value if you have costco membership. I just checked and they are 65% tomatoes, 35% juice.

20min after post, sold out anyway

Can we NOT normalise imported goods that are inferior and more expensive than locally grown??

$1.40 a tin for Aussie Ardmona tomatoes at Woolies

    This isn't a deal.

      I just posted similar .
      Buy Aussie!

Can you provide a like for like comparison to a San Marzano tomato though? I agree with the sentiment but San Marzano's are not a generic tomato

    • -2

This is why…I'll take 100% tomatoes imported over Ardmona any day.
Crushed Tomato (63%), Tomato Juice, Tomato Paste,,Thickener (1422).

As an FYI…the tomatoes in this deal or not even San Marzano, don't be fooled by the name. It must have the these logos.

Just buy Mutti or make your own.

      • -1

The imported tomatoes are listed at 60% on the Amazon listing…?

If you were trying to make a point then it was a bit watered down

        • +1

          "…100% tomatoes imported"
          "…buy Mutti"
Not reading my post correctly makes you come across thickener

Unfortunately Australian canned tomatoes are terrible rubbish. I'd either get fresh or Italian.

  • -7

Aussie tinned tomatoes at colesworth are much cheaper than this.

    • +3

And they are rubbish compared to Mutti. I have not seen any which are 99% tomatoes and taste as good as Mutti.

      • +1

Fan of mutti here as well

      • -4

A fabulous cook will be able to take the cheapest tomatoes and have the skills to be able to make a beautiful, rich sauce that tastes as good as the Mutti/ premium brands. Most excellent home cooks will always be able use substitute ingredients and still making a cracking dish. Mutti Schmutti.

        • +1

San Marzano is a whole different tomato for a whole different taste.
Its not a substitute the whole vegetable is different.

          • -2

@JPNx: My point is, if a half decent home cook can't produce a delightfully decent ragu or even a pizza sauce using only 79c cans of homebrand tomatoes as a base, and won't use anything BUT Mutti, then it's the cooking skills that are lacking, not the tomatoes. Mutti toms should be viewed as a luxury. Not an essential.

            • @HappyPants: not a cook, but I enjoy the flavours of Mutti over other brands

“La Bella San Marzano” is a registered trademark it seems, which is quite misleading. These are just expensive generic Italian tomatoes NOT legit san marzano ones. No deal

  • Agree Sir,the real San Marzano are the best.

for those debating whether La Bella San Marzano are actually San Marzano tomatoes start reading https://www.pizzamaking.com/forum/index.php?topic=1476.0

Page 2 probably gives the best info, they are based in San Marzano itself & explain why they are not DOP certified but make you own mind up. Having tried different brands of San Marzano canned tomatoes I have realised they can be quite different & also different harvests will provide differences even from the same company. My local Italian deli sell this brand but I am yet to try as so far I prefer another they sell. Also the San MArzano type of tomatoes are grown outside of Italy too
