  • Man where was this Saturday before I lumped myself with a physical card

Literally went to buy beer at my local brewery but they use a bloody square reader lol

    • +2

You can exchange a physical TCN Pub & Bar gift card for the digital Mastercard version. Obviously not very helpful now, but handy to know for next time.

If you do not know how to do an exchange, read this FAQ.

I had a feeling that was the case! Had a look but must have missed it. Doing great work as usual Wookie

  • So this will work at any restaurants or eateries in Australia?

    • In the post description:

Not accepted at merchants classified as Fast Food Restaurants (MCC 5814).

    • +11

Short answer: it will not work at all restaurants or eateries in Australia.

Long answer… It depends on a couple of factors.

      1. The MCC assigned to the restaurant or eatery.

A restaurant or eatery can be assigned one of a number of different MCCs, depending on the nature of the business. For example, it could be assigned one of the following MCCs (and this is not an exhaustive list):

      • MCC 5462: Bakeries
      • MCC 5811: Caterers
      • MCC 5812: Eating Places, Restaurants
      • MCC 5813: Bars, Cocktail Lounges, Discotheques, Nightclubs, and Taverns: Drinking Places (Alcoholic Beverages)
      • MCC 5814: Fast Food Restaurants
      • MCC 5921: Package Stores, Beer, Wine, and Liquor1
      • MCC 7011: Lodging: Hotels, Motels, Resorts: not elsewhere classified2
      • MCC 7996: Amusement Parks, Carnivals, Circuses, Fortune Tellers3
      • MCC 7997: Clubs: Country Clubs, Membership (Athletic, Recreation, Sports), Private Golf Courses4

According to the gift card terms and conditions, the only officially permitted MCCs on this gift card are MCC 5812, MCC 5813 and MCC 7997 (although the GCDB website has reported that this gift card may also work at MCC 5921).

MCC 5814 is known to be blocked on this gift card, which is an issue, because restaurants or eateries that you may not necessarily expect to be assigned MCC 5814 will be assigned it. That is unfortunately the nature of MCCs, which adds a challenge to using these gift cards when compared with other restaurant-related gift cards where MCC 5814 is allowed (e.g. digital TCN Restaurant gift cards, Restaurant Choice gift cards).

      2. Whether the restaurant or eatery chooses to accept TCN Pub & Bar gift cards as a payment method.

Assuming the restaurant or eatery you go to uses a permitted MCC, you can only use this gift card at restaurants or eateries that choose to accept it as a payment method. Generally speaking, it should be fine, but here are some examples of edge cases to be aware of:

      • A while ago, I went to a restaurant where their EFTPOS terminal was so old that they kept on rejecting payments via Apple Pay and Samsung Wallet. This is highly unusual though, because mobile payments have been around for years and EFTPOS terminals these days should be able to accept them.

      • If you order via a QR code at a table, some websites will reject this gift card if you input its details directly into the debit/credit card section of the checkout, because it is unable to support 3-D Secure and is therefore a "less secure" payment method to accept as a merchant. You can get around this by using Apple Pay or Google Pay at the online checkout (where this is supported).

      • If you are paying in-person and the staff member notices you are using a gift card as a payment method (e.g. because you are like this person and you ask staff before you pay), you may find staff will say no (whether it is out of caution, confusion, etc). I would avoid asking staff whether they accept this gift card and simply ask to pay by Mastercard.

      1. The only reason I would expect this to happen is if you were at a pub that sold food and alcohol to be consumed on-premises, as well as alcohol that can be consumed off-premises. In this case, the EFTPOS terminal provider is not supposed to use MCC 5813, as Mastercard says that MCC is only for where alcohol is consumed on-premises. This scenario tends to happen in Queensland, likely due to Queensland offering commercial hotel licences

      2. You are only likely to see this if you went to a hotel that had a restaurant within it, and either you charged your meal to your room account, or you paid at an EFTPOS terminal at the restaurant that was not assigned MCC 5812.

      3. You are only likely to see this if you went to a restaurant or food truck or other type of eatery within a theme park or carnival.

      4. I suspect you would only see this MCC if you went to a members-only club (e.g. a country club) and the EFTPOS terminals at their restaurants were assigned MCC 7997 instead of MCC 5812 or MCC 5813.

lol what expired before 9am. That’s insane. Why even make this promotion available if you’re going to expire it so quickly. What a joke

    • +4

Makes me think someone's found a way to make money from these cards and are buying up the whole stockpile.

      • I tried to buy GC did not work phone authorisation required.

        • did they give you 10% off? i only received $50 wish instead

      • I could ask you: Yes.

Perhaps not many gift cards were available. They seem to have sold out a bit quicker than expected, in about 8 hours during normal sleeping hours.

  • What? Did they only have 2 cards available? Tried earlier, and got a "no promotions available". Tried to give it another go now; same spiel, so thought I'd check back here to see if I had the times right.

    • I posted this offer but also missed out as I didn't buy straightaway.

    • Coles still has 10% off that ends today ($50, $100) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/897212
just went to my local Coles and there's plenty of stock

      • Once you used $500 too hard to go back

        • yea, agree that $500 ones are much easier to use (some places doesnt allow split payments)
but at least TCN pub and bar can "go digital" which can be added to mobile wallet
so no need to carry multiple cards around

          • +1

@littlesoldier: Given the cost of going to the pub, I don't understand why they don't make larger denominations. Trying to split payment into $50 blocks is just too much hassle.

            • +1

@t25: Probably main reason is this is a gift card, and people typically will only “gift” $50 or $100 as a gift, originally probably not designed for self consumption

            • @t25: Especially with the pesky credit card fees

              • +1

@arcticmonkey: After COVID it seems almost every establishment is passing on those fees. Even those who have absorbed it in the past are passing it on.
