Showing $4.49 for me with steam login.

Is it better than the other versions inclusing DS and SNES from their experience?

    • +3

      DS is the definite edition

I hear its the best! But its so expensive. Apparently the Japanese version also includes English which made it a bit of an easier way to get it. But I've never seen it confirmed.

        • I believe the DS version does as per https://tcrf.net/Chrono_Trigger_(Nintendo_DS).

Have not tested it myself but the SNES JP version does not have english that I am aware of.

I can confirm the Japanese DS version of Chronotrigger has English text. I have a copy here and have played it through.

I logged into my GMG account and the price changed down to $3.68.

      • I logged into my GMG account and the price didn't change, still showing $4.49

        • You need to have spent some money with GMG to get gold tier for the discount. Gold tier is for life though. It's just one of them way to not have to price match.

I booted up the DS version the other day on my 3DS. The low resolution of the screen and lack lustre colour was like I needed glasses. I'll take the Steam version on my SteamDeck OLED and sacrifice the 2 missing bonus anime cut scenes and the missing bonus dungeon for the clarity and convenience. You can watch a 15 minute deep dive into the differences between all versions: https://youtu.be/mxzFLfx0-tM?si=FhrOlzlWhMV4nOiK

IIRC the 3DS uses a different pixel structure that makes it look perceptually lower resolution than an actual DS screen.

DSi XLs all have IPS screens and I can at least subjectively confirm it looks significantly sharper than any of my 3DSes.

I prefer the Steam version overall.

The DS version uses a new translation, added anime cutscenes and some endgame content over the SNES version. Opinion on which translation is better is pretty 50/50.

The Steam version has most of the DS version's additions, except two(?) anime cutscenes, the in-game bestiary and one endgame area (a monster training minigame called the Arena of the Ages). The Steam version plays at a higher resolution and has an auto-battle/speed up button.

The DS version is the most content-complete, but I prefer playing the Steam version.

    • +6

  • Chrono Cross also heavily discounted at the moment. I never played it, but have listened to the soundtrack many times. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/898924

Interesting, didn't know this was on pc.

    The best JRPG ever. Period.

    • +2

I will also die on this hill. Best ever.

      • +2

I, too, will also die on this hill glorious mountain!

One of the most impactful JRPG journeys ever.

  • What other games is this comparable to? I've not played a jrpg before. Are the negative reviews true: is it buggy and does it crash on pc?

    • Comparable modern JRPGs are Ni No Kuni or Octopath Traveler series. Or Final Fantasy 5/6, if you want to compare to retro JRPGs.
