256GB USB 3.0 Thumb Drives

Hi Guys,

can anyone recommend me a fast, cheap & cheerful 256gb USB 3.0 thumb drive?

I want a USB 3 thumb drive because i want to attach it to my key chain. It will need to be fast because I plan on running a VM from it so i can save space on my laptop which has a small SSD drive.

    I wouldn't expect cheap at 256GB.

  • Careful because USB3 is not the same thing as fast. Sure the bus is faster than USB2, but if the storage is slow, it is completely pointless. Particularly to run a VM off it you really need good random write speed. To get USB3, fast memory and 256GB be prepared to pay serious money, this is not the sort of application that most of these devices are made for.

    • Agreed. I would be buying ext portable drive. I know it's bigger but they are much much cheaper and more stable.
I used to do this when I run VM as well.

      • A USB3 500gb Hard Drive maybe? 7200rpm?
It seems silly to buy a 256gb SSD Hard Drive with USB3 enclosure. But I guess it will go a fair bit faster. You probably already know that, but 5G/bit per second with USB3 spec and SSD only goes up to 6G/bit per second so you only losing out on 1G/Bit a second by using USB3.

So maybe you should be looking for a decent USB3 enclosure.
        and a cheap 256gb SSD.

otherwise 500gb officeworks or harvey norman or The good guys WD deal for $48 if it's still running. Cannot remember who was running it.

    • Yep I agree, hence why i wanted something fast (not just something with a 'USB 3.0' label)

Damn, if it's going to be expensive then i'll just to have wait (i already have a fairly fast 500gb USB 3.0 portable drive but i wanted something to attach to my keychain… no I will not attach a 2.5" portable drive to my keychain no matter how possible it is to do so) until the prices for these things drop (hopefully in about 3 months?)

  • Go SSD; those suckers are plug & play.

Does anyone know of a fast USB 3.0 portable drive then? (not looking to fork out the money for an portable SSD drive!)
