Advice on New Glasses Causing Eye Strain

So best outcome there are some glasses techs or optometrists on here, and I'll preface by saying I have an optometrist appointment for Tuesday to look at this, but here we go.

In January I went to OPSM (I like Oakley glasses) for an eye test, my 2 year old prescription went from;
Right eye, -2.46, -0.86, 170,
left eye, -2.25, -0.50, 8.
HD prescription. And my old glasses were fantastic. Decided to get a new test before buying new glasses and my new script was;
right eye, -2.25, -0.87, 164,
left eye, -2.36, -0.46, 6.

So going with that I bought some new glasses, went all out, used some deals, did all right. But lenses were Eyezen Start, Eyezen boost 0.85, 1.67 lenses, transitions XtraActive Polarised.
My old glasses, were also Eyezen Start, Eyezen Boost, and normal transitions, not thin lenses.

So I got the new glasses and while they were sharp I find I sometimes get eye strain, especially if on a computer or mobile. A headache makes the strain more noticeable. Also I find I get uncomfortable with my old prescription sunglasses and swap back to my normal glasses. And sometime when I'm looking at things and then look at something else there's like a …. hard to describe, fraction of a second lag to focus?

My new glasses come with a certificate of authenticity with the ordered power and the measured power of the lenses. I don't know how good or bad it is, but ordered is what it says above for my new prescription, but the measured is;
Right eye, -2.18, -0.70, 172, add 0.73 (I'm guessing that last is the Eyezen Boost)
Left Eye -2.24, -0.40, 171, add 0.73.

I'm not sure how much tolerance there is in manufacturing but something that stands out to me is that my left my Astigmatism axis is the wrong direction. Meant to be 6, and is 171. But I know that's a low Cylinder power.

Anyone got any insight or recommendations besides just wait for the appointment?

Cheers in advance.

            @Bruceflix: Yes, they are very ugly…

  • I think potentially your old glasses may not have been eyezen boost otherwise it would have the add on the card.

    It explains why it would take you a second to actually focus as you would need to be finding the clearest part of the lens.

    Otherwise most likely adaptation issue, the biggest thing you can do for yourself is be viligant in finding a solution with OPSM. If you have issues keep pressing them for a solution no matter how many remakes etc.

    • The old ones didn't come with a card. But I just checked the receipt and they were definitely on the receipt. Same level of Boost as the new ones. "Plast 1.49 EYEZEN BOOST DIGITAL 0.85"

    If you're concerned the perscription is not correct then immediately swap back to your old glasses.

    You can make an appointment, but otherwise you can defintely just walk in - considering that your script didn't change dramatically, this is more likely a dispensing problem rather than a script issue.

    Show them the measurements on the COA and insist that they vert (measure) your glasses' script - very often they'll just tell you that you're "getting used to" the new script and to give it some time. "Eyezen" is just marketing speak for a multifocal lens - so verify that your pupil distance and pupil heights are correct and if the multifocal type is exactly the same as your old glasses - both of these issues could indicate why you are feeling a "lag" (i.e. the different sections of the lens aren't where you're used to/expect them to be).

    FYI the axis you're referring to symetrical, e.g. the difference between 1 and 180 is a single degree, so the difference between 6 and 171 is (although not insignificant) is only ~15 degrees different.

    • Thanks for the reply. I'll definitely be asking the optometrist about these. I drive a lot for my job so good vision is required.

    Probably misses his old glasses.

    • Still got them. Actually I still got something like my last 3 sets of glasses.

    My suggestion would be to go to an independent optometrist

    OPSM—owned by EssilorLuxottica—has only 5 or 6 lenses to choose from. So, out of the 100s or even 1,000s of different lenses, you're getting a very narrow choice of what could be the best solution/lens for you.

    I am not saying that the lenses aren't any good, but say like shoes, imagine if you go to Rebel, and the only running shoes they CAN/WILL sell you are by Nike - you can have anything, so long as it's Nike. Now for some people, these will be great, but most likely for most, there would be better options.

    Check out Provision or Eyecare Plus for a decent independent optom near you

    • I understand your position. Up until this set of glasses, my OPSM glasses have always been fantastic hence why I stuck with them, regardless of their high prices.

    Should've gone to Specsavers… well someone had to say it.

    • Can't argue with that.

    • Still got them. And I like the new glasses style, and frankly the sharpness of them is great, it's just the eye aches.

    Eye problem: see professional, don't ask random people on the internet.

      I am, in my post I said I have an appointment on Tuesday. Just seeing if anyone has any ideas or recommendations.

  • Eyezen boost lens is a graduated lens like a multifocal. Your previous lenses may have just been single vision. How old are you? You may not need an eyezen boost lens. Also, you prescription change is negligible.

    • Am 38. My old ones had the same power eyezen boost and I found them very comfortable. I did change shape from a more rectangular lens to a taller rounder lens, don't know if that changes anything.

      • Unlikely, but never know. Also, the hi index(thinner lens) can sometimes affect some people. Also was the old Eyezen boost also 0.85 or was it less like 0.6

        • Same Boost power as before.

    Well update after the appointment today. The script seems to be fine, but the measurements of the glasses seem to be slightly off. From what I gathered the PD for each eye was about 1mm off on each eye. And the…. focal height (?) from the bottom of the frame to the middle of the pupil was a bit off too.

    That seemed to match what I saw in the test room. Looking at a image if I tilt my head back I have a bit of leeway until image starts to get a bit worse, but tilting head forward it starts getting less sharp straight away. Also the…. right eye, I think it was, was a bit better than the left for that. Also apparently one of my pupils is a little higher than the other.

    They are remaking the lenses for free, see how the new one are when they arrive.
