Mothercare: deals, good prices,..ie What to spend the Amex offer vouchers on?? And general Baby items thread

Now that I'm expecting and baby obsessed, I've noticed a lack of a baby stuff thread….
And those baby stores really suck you in and sell you lots of crap at huge markups.

So I was thrilled to get some mothercare vouchers through the various Amex deals……

But having already bought the big items and many small items, I'm now at a loss at how to spend my "bargain" giftcards….

Also thought anyone wanting to mention good baby deals/items that aren't really exciting enough for the deal page could do so without getting booed off the deal pages. Especially since mothercare pricematches :p

To start off….
Medela swing electric breast pump new, cheapest I've found is Toys R us at $224.95
Sophie the giraffe cheapest I've found is Metromum (in Sydney) bulk pack, must buy two to get it at $23.85 each (ok if a friend wants one too or you need a gift) (its cheaper overseas, but this is what I used to pricematch at mothercare)

The ELC toys at the moment are mostly more expensive than a couple of months ago.
Anyone else?

  • Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your baby.

Here are some thoughts as a new mum. I just had my baby girl 11 weeks ago.

Breast pump - i would rent a Medela Symphony breast pump for the first month after delivering the baby to get your milk supply up before buying a pump. Some women are unable to breast feed, so wait until the baby is born before buying the pump of your own. I use the Medela Swing and it is good.

Breast milk storage - Avoid wasting money on disposable breast milk bags to store frozen milk. Use the little food containers designed for babies starting on solids. They are the perfect size for one feed. You will get more milage out of these containers as storage for frozen breast milk. Then continue to use them when your baby is on solids at around 6 months.

Bonds baby gear is cheapest via the Bonds website when they are on sale. They do free shipping. For the first few weeks your bubba will be wearing the Bonds Wondersuits most hours of the day. It is comfortable and easy to do nappy changes quickly when in a Wondersuit.

Key takeaway: Hold off buying stuff unless you see it on sale.

Clothes - My daughter has received enough clothing as gifts or hand-me-downs to last her three years! No need to go nuts buying clothes as you will most likely receive a lot as gifts. However if you have to buy clothes, go buy baby singlets.

Books & Toys - Books and toys are the next most popular baby shower gift. No need to go lashing out on these. For the first few months of the baby's life, the best toy is the parent who will interact with the baby. Again, my daughter has received lots of Lamaze toys and classic books. Also, the Toy Library is an option to consider. Membership is about $70 a year depending on the suburb/municipality. These are usually council run. The toy library toys are usually cleaned thoroughly before being loaned out. Well, that is the case in my local toy library.

Baby wipes - If you don'r mind no name brand wipes, the cheapest baby wipes are the Woolworths home brand wipes at 2 cents a wipe. It comes in a box of 6 packets for about $9. Aldi's are the next cheapest at 3 cents a wipe. Both are really good.

Nappies - Huggies nappies when on sale ranges between $27 and $30. When you see the cheap, buy up. When baby arrives it is near impossible to push a pram and lug boxes of nappies out of the store.

Sudocrem and other baby hygiene creams and potions are cheapest at Chemist Warehouse. They are consistently cheaper all year round. Most of these items you will receive as samples in the Bounty Bag that they give you in the hospital.

    All the best!

  • Muimuimorris I enjoyed reading all your recommendations and as a mum of a 5 month old agree with everything you have said!

But I never realised woollies wipes are cheaper. I've been comparing the cost per wipe of a few brands now and have never thought to compare woollies brand (silly me). My favourite brand of wipes is curash but aldi are great as a backup option.

As for mothercare, I think the best deal ATM is their safe n sound meridian ahr carseat from memory it's down from 360 to 249? Something along those lines. That should take a big chunk out of your voucher..

Here are some of my other favourite products from mothercare:

    • outlook car window shade
    • diono car 12v bottle warmer
    • pram hooks
    • travel cutlery case (when my baby started solids I couldn't find a baby cutlery case ANYWHERE and it's such a must when you're out otherwise I have to carry cutlery in a sandwich bag which gets messy.)
    • mothercare onesies/jumpsuits are the cutest!
    • bandana bibs mothercare also have the cutest

    Have fun shopping!

  • They do price match

  • I just bought a Medela Swing from Amazon UK for $146.49!!! I joined their Amazon Family program which is free for the first 3 months (can cancel at any time) which gave me access to extra discounts so:

Swing was GBP99.99 (discounted to GBP83.33)
    Postage was GBP18.97
Less deal of GBP10 off for purchases over GBP50.00

    Total was GBP92.30

If you prefer the Ameda Lactaline Personal Dual Electric Breastpump which I used last pregnancy and thought it was really good - there is a GBP99.00 less GBP40.00 using code MNKR9YON

They also have a brilliant deal on the Angelcare monitors - the prices are way less than ours plus currently a 20% discount on top!!!!

  • Don't know about Mothercare (we bought most of stuff from Amazon and other places online :)) but here is a list of things we have bought and would recommend:-

    • Pram ($585)

Babyjogger City Select from Amazon. Excellent fold technology (not as good as the GT) but has has the ability for a second seat (one of the many critcisms a lot of new mums buy and then have to replace their pram when the second comes along)

    http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Jogger-Select-Single-Stroller/dp/…

    • Capsule ($189)

If you are planning on having more than one kid, buy a Steelcraft Cruiser we bought at midyear on sale from Target. Easily transport the little one from home to the car to the shops and vice versa. Not compatibly with the BJCS stroller, unless you buy more expensive versions that dont have as high saftey rating.

Otherwise you can probably hire for $100 as your baby may outgrow within 3 months

    • Car Seat ($440)

Safe n Sound Meridian AHR. Highly rated on the safety scores, well built and versatile.

    • Cot, change table and mattress ($599)

TASMAN ECO SIENA COT, MATTRESS PACKAGE WITH FREE TURIN CHANGE TABLE $599 from Babies Direct. Well made (you have to put it together) but feels solid and looks great. The cot is a 3 in 1 so changes from bassinet to cot to toddlers bed and can also change to toddlers lounge chair with optional kit.

    • Baby Monitor ($140)

Angelcare Monitor with twin handsets and motion sensor from Amazon. Comforting to know baby is OK and the alarm goes off when no movement is detected.

    http://www.amazon.com/Angelcare-Movement-Sound-Monitor-Delux…

    • Baby Seat ($140)

Baby Bjorn Baby Sitter Balance from Amazon. This has to be the most used item as baby loves to sit in it after a feed and also handy if your alone and need to get bottles ready.

    http://www.amazon.com/BABYBJORN-BabySitter-Balance-Brown-Bei…

    • Baby Carrier ($170)

Great back support and baby loves to be held when we go to the shops. We bought this from Toys-R-Us but Amazon is cheaper!

    http://www.amazon.com/BABYBJORN-Miracle-Cotton-Carrier-Silve…

    • Philips Advent Twin Breast Pump ($160)

My wife couldn't get baby to latch onto breast so this was a god send as it ensured milk supply and allowed us to feed baby from bottle. Twin pump empties both breast within 10 minutes (her friends has a cheaper version and it takes about 20 minutes plus!). We bought some extra advent bottles to store milk.

    http://www.amazon.com/Philips-AVENT-Free-Electric-Breast/dp/…

    • Philips Advent Sterliser x 2 ($22 each)

We bought two as with feeds every 3 hours this allowed us to plan ahead to ensure breast pump and bottles were sterilised well in advanced.

    http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001C3KXPG/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M…

I used huggies nappies and wipes as I felt the cheaper ones weren't as good. We bought enough nappies to last baby a while from BigW at $27 a box and box of wipes for $15. Stock up when they go on sale afterall they're not perishable!

What we contemplated but didn't buy:-

    • Bottle warmer, unnecessary as a bowl of hot water does the same trick
    • Nappy disposal system as cartridges are too expensive. We buy these 200 nappy bags from K-mart from $4 which are scented and big enough to hold nappy plus wipes.
    • Clothes, we were gifted and handed down too much
    • Wraps / Muslim Cloths once again we were gifted

What were last minute buys and are handy:
    - Bibs you never need to many!
    - Disposable change mats that go over the change table. Kmart sells 8 in a box for $4. Avoids baby messing the change table!
    - Dummies our baby was attached from day one. We were given a couple from the hospital and later found out they are only supplied from medical supply shops so had a box of 10 delivered for $50

    • Thanks. I was planning to get the City Select from Amazon. The red one is now on sale for $409. For a baby boy, is it strage to have him sitting in a red pram?

      • +1

        No

        • +1

          Red one usually goes faster.

        • zoom, zoom, zoom…

  • Thanks for the suggestions all! The milk storage containers too are a much better idea than bags!
I have already bought most of the big stuff on sale or second hand or online. Didn't know what else to gt at mothercare with the vouchers but they sort of spent themselves on very little when we went.
Not used amazon before. Might have to look into it as we go along.
