Free monitoring by the Chinese Government.

      Lol what will they monitor
How many times you're ordering from Amazon or when you take out trash?

As someone who used to work in the security industry, you would have no idea the things that get picked up by cameras designed to monitor something totally separate. In my time I have pulled footage for 3rd parties more often than I have for the people that actually own the cameras(with their permission of course).

I work in data security on the technology side of things… What data points do you mean will be relevant to CCP about what your neighbors or you or doing in a suburb?

It would be different case if it's a sensitive military area or nearby it in which case there should already be lots of control on types cameras, their locations that can be used for personal monitoring

          • @dealt: You answered your own question, it doesn't necessarily have to be military related to be sensitive data. Politicians live in our streets just like we do, same as military commanders and higher ups, they all go home to families at the end of the day. Think about it, think how far and wide the term "sensitive data" can actually go. From movements of hazardous materials, important persons, equipment to simply catching a random mobile phone call. Data gathering is all about casting the widest net as possible.

Its all about probability at the end of the day, I am just saying its not actually unheard of for cameras to pick up stuff like this, if you want to get deeper into specifics such as the CCP and their interests its probably best for the forums lol. The assassination of the healthcare CEO was captured on hotel CCTV footage, I guarantee you thats not the reason they put that camera in there.. I know old mate was just doing it as an alarmist-joke type thing, I am just saying its not impossible for this to actually happen.

People tend to overthink how important they are

      • +1

The problem isn’t how important they are - the real question is how clueless and arrogant they can be.

I went with Reolink a few months ago and am happy. The comparable product to this is ~$10-$20 more on sale and there is an ecosystem of cameras and local storage for it. No subscription.

    • From memory the Reolink ones require to be wired, whereas this one is wireless.

      • You can get Wireless Cameras and Doorbells. Wired is always best though. Finally installed my Wired Doorbell today, changed it over from my Ring Doorbell.

If you're with the TP-Link Tapo ecosystem you might as well buy the Tapo doorbell cameras (roughly $150), as those come with a hub that not only works for the camera but for the sensors and smart buttons

The hub itself is Matter-enabled too.
