First time poster, long time lurker.

20% off one of the best sets made by Lego in the last few years.

I am not sure on the duration of the deal - the link doesn't indicate a duration. But to get 20% off is almost unheard of.

I bought it RRP from Lego.com and it was a wonderful build experience and an even more impressive display piece!

EDIT - sorry for not knowing the best way to post the title, etc…I am tempted to buy a second one to make the tower even bigger!

    Price in the title?

    • Sorry, realised I missed that when I posted - updated it now!

Can't imagine this will last too long.

Seems this has been on sale for a few days already, was posted as part of another Amazon Lego deal.

Either Amazon has a ton of stock or the price is putting off buyers.

real Lego, or just an imitation?

        • +11

I have never seen any actual Lego sets on those websites, and while the imitation products can vary from abysmal to quite good, saying that you can get it (being the Lego set) for $160-200 is pretty misleading as you are not getting the real thing.

That being said, if real Lego is available for such prices from those websites, then I will be both broke and stoked!

            • @Shiroi Okami: There is nothing in that product page that convinces me that it is a real Lego set.

The name of the manufacturer, the photos with the Lego logo edited out, the strange photoshopping of the set number. Each to their own, I guess.

@morgues23: No one on AliExpress ever puts 'LEGO' or LEGO branding anywhere it's a surefire way to have far too many lawyers tucking you in at night. Given that it has the same number of pieces as the real set, it's more likely that these are genuine sets. Otherwise, they would have to create a mold for every single brick and match the colors perfectly. Chances are, the factories in China that produce them simply make extra sets to sell on the side.

                • +12

@Shiroi Okami: You don't need all these mental gymnastics mate, they're fake, plain and simple.

You're over estimating corruption and the cost of making knock-off moulds from a product that already exists.

                  • @eagerfisherman: There are thousands of factories in china that make extra product and sell it on the side its one of the risks of having a chinese factory make your product.

                • @Shiroi Okami: ali express - made in china
                  lego - made in china
so its probably made from the same warehouse or either ali express warehouse knows the workers from the warehouse where lego is made and they've replicated enough to look like the real thing.

I've been tempted to buy from aliexpress just to try it out coz like e.g. titanic lego is like 1k where as aliexpress you can get it for $200-$300 so wanted to see the difference lol

                  • @prankster:

                    lego - made in china
so its probably made from the same warehouse

That’s your assumption but it’s wrong. Lego is made in various countries, some (as of recently) in China. Maybe that’s why we’re seeing imitations.

                    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego?wprov=sfti1#Manufacturing

Also, warehouses don’t make anything, and Lego isn’t made “of” warehouses, it’s usually ABS plastic.

                • +3

@Shiroi Okami: So you actually don't have any idea and are just giving the benefit of the doubt to a clearly knock-off peddling Chinese warehouse?

The reason nobody on Ali puts LEGO on their ads is because they aren't selling LEGO.

                • @Shiroi Okami: Most likely fake set. Many years ago, Aliexpress (& other Chinese sites) sold Lego counterfeit called 'Lepin'. Sets were much cheaper & very close to Lego, but often some not-so-great fitting parts, but at the price, it wasnt a big deal imo. LEGO ended up suing & LEPIN was gone. They had some good sets too.

With that being said, chances are, the 'Lego' sets sold on Aliexpress & other Chinese stores are copies. Wouldn't be too difficult though, being simple ABS plastic bricks.

                • @Shiroi Okami: You sir, are delusional. Legitimate LEGO sets HAHAHHA

          • @morgues23: Not to nerd out but it'll be a copy, Chinese off brand Lego isn't bad but you can't fake the funk. Last time I was there they had this amazing dinosaur fighter jet theme. Lego is pretty cheap in Australia in any case the only cheaper place is Hong Kong.

        • It seems they're mostly great for building and look at but you might be missing stuff.

        imitation

My wife bought a knock off Fell Beast (which was a GWP with this set and genuine copies sold for way too much) from Ali Express and while all the pieces are there, they don't hold together as well so it's impossible to pose it how you should.
Definitely not as good as genuine Lego, if it's worth the price is up to the buyer but it's not 1:1.

      • -1

Jump onto BrickLink & buy the replacement parts needed to fit together better :).

        • She ended up buying Barad Dur at full price recently when it went back up with the GWP, it arrived yesterday! She did buy replacement black hands though, the knock off ones came with pink hands for some reason haha

One does not simply walk on Lego

  • Tempting…….

  • Definitely a buy now, regret later piece.

    • Or it could be buy now, celebrate later if the set appreciates in value.

      • Would something like your seriously go up in value? I'm not too privy when it comes to Lego.

As in, do people buy these to make some $$ or is it not worth it?

        • -1

Yes if the person buying it is a fan. Even Stanley flask have become collectors item.

  • +2

Be warned, this set is quite tall, even if you think "yeah I can read the spec" and pull out a ruler, you won't really appreciate it.

It's difficult to display, most shelving won't fit it (and the depth as well). I tried it on my desk but it's just too bulky and looked bad.

Sadly, despite being awesome, it sits on the floor of a cupboard, still haven't found a place for it.

    • +1

      That's a shame!

I was able to find a spot for it on top of one of those cube shelves, like Kallax from Ikea or the Bunnings version.

    • Yeah saw this at the Lego store and first thought was "wow this is awesome but will never have the space"

    • Sounds good. My kids have all these City sets and flower (Creator?) sets on display in our living room. Time for me to add to it with something way better. Saturn V would be good too, mate at work has one on his desk.

    • Just wondering if you could get something like a hallway table made up with this being the centrepiece underneath. You can make them quite tall because you dump keys, change, etc on the table. Just an idea.

      • Just need a hallway to complete the look!

    • +1

So buy a fake from China, with no consumer protections, and no guarantee that the "set" will be complete, or even compatible with itself? Sure… that sounds like a great deal

      • -1

Just raising awareness for those interested in the set but can't afford at this price =)

Always go by reviews and preferably choice sellers. Better even if reviewers have photos!

      • no consumer protections = credit card chargeback. I've never had an issue getting a refund from AE either. Set may not be complete, but you can buy pieces from BrickLink. Not defending the purchase of a Chinese knockoff, but when set is 1/3 the price of Lego, I can see the appeal.

    • I wouldn't rely on the 'sets sold' figure tbh, though many of those chinese copies aren't too bad tbh. Saw some on Youtube.

  • It could also be used as a hat stand once it’s built…🤠

  • +2

Buying a knock off Lego set would be like buying a knock off designer brand. You know it is a knock off so it takes the shine off ownership.

    • There's a difference between buying something because of brand & buying it because it looks good. With the Lego sets, some people just want the visuals & don't care about the brand attached to it.

      • Maybe? However I suspect with a lot of the more expensive sets it is about the prestige as well. Imagine showing it to your friends and they are making fun of you behind your back because it is a knock off.

        • I wouldn't show my friends. i don't like people touching my stuff, lol. They could also just as easily laugh because of how much I spent on plastic bricks. But, if I did show them, and they laughed, then they're not really friends.

          • @Widget: Do people really touch other people’s Lego models? Quelle horreur. I’m just pointing out that for adults doing Lego there is certainly a level of prestige around the provenance of the sets. I suspect they wouldn’t laugh at you in front of you.

    Not sure what happened….
I saw the title and blacked out. Next thing I know, I get an Order Confirmation email….

    • Maybe someone snuck up behind you, knocked you unconscious, then purchased one using your account/card? I would log in asap and cancel your order before it processes =O
