I know it's an Epomaker and people hate it but it's pretty cheap for a mechanical keyboard with VIA and small screen. RRP is $148 (probably inflated).
Got one for a beater at work.

Also on sale are:

  • How does Shadow-X compare to Shadow-S?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0CYKV52NX

    • You can see the Shadow-X is missing the function keys. That would be a dealbreaker for me.

      • Exactly, so the Shadow-S is better.

    • The Shadow-X knob isn’t even a volume adjuster, the Shadow-S knob is.

I've been out of the mechanical keyboard game for a few years since my last keychron. Do we know why everyone and their dog decided to come up with meaningless names for their switches? Quite a few don't even say if they are clickies or tactile or linear, its a 'flying fish" switch or a "Gift v2" switch..

Am I an old man yelling at clouds? or is there something that I'm missing?

    • +1

You’re completely right. I think it might be a sales tactic, so you don’t know how the keys are off of a glance, and will have to look at a video for it, which will possibly get you to interact and find interest with the keyboard.

Or maybe I’m just spitting nonsense as well?

      • +2

That's what I originally thought as well. I was considering the Ajazz AK980 ( under $100 on aliexpress ), and I looked up some videos. All I could find is a bunch of people showing how it sounds, without saying a single word….

And all of the titles say "Creamy" switches. I'm not buying a Ninja Icecream maker, I'm buying a keyboard…

      • so you don’t know how the keys are off of a glance, and will have to look at a video for it, which will possibly get you to interact and find interest with the keyboard.

Switches and keyboards are not the same thing.

If you weren't sure what switch type a certain switch was, what would you do? Search it up on Google. What comes up? Details of the switches, not the keyboard.

For example, referencing the Ajazz @Brotality linked, I search up the TTC Flame Red switch on YouTube, and I literally can't find a single video with the Flame Reds in the Ajazz. And no, TTC and Ajazz are not the same company.

        • I know all about switches, I bought so many keyboards that I started giving them away to family and friends.

It just isn't simple. Its easy for me to make a decision if each switch option comes with forces details (ideally a graph), travel distance, actuation point, etc. But they don't, and finding the exact details isn't easy, definitely not just a google query away.

The thing is, if its this much work for experts like us, newbies are screwed. Chances are they'll end up with something they are not happy with and give up on something cool.

      doesn't matter. here's where we're at:

mechanical switches are dead! hall effect switches are the shiny new thing

      • -1

        no?

The mech keyboard scene is still alive and strong, heck even Cherry themselves are retooling their switches and releasing new ones (MX2As).

        • -1

          I'm being facetious.

    • Yeah, they are full of meaningless names now. You knew what the old Red, Brown and Blue were.

There was one on OzBargain a few days ago with "flamingo" switches.

      • There are hundreds of switch variants out there with different actuation forces, spring weights, materials, travel distance etc. - are you expecting all of them to be named either blue, brown or red?

      • Talking of meaningless names…

Red means? Umm, the switches are coloured red!

You knew what one particular brand who had no variants for their switches were.

    • Typical Chinese sales tactics.
      Chaos

      But you know what?

They are surprisingly good quality for the price so you STFU and just buy a couple.

    • There are so many different switches out there and they have to differentiate themselves somehow, what do you expect them to do?

They always provide spec sheets for the switches anyway (actuation force, switch type, etc.), and if not, they're just a Google search away.

I have the AK820 Pro. Really nice for the price. The screen is a bit of a gimmick, but it's nice to see the battery life.

    • Yeah I have one as well it’s very nice for the price.

Hope they can display CPU/GPU temp

can you completely change these ones though? switches, keycaps, pcb? etc?

Thanks OP, was eyeing the Epo X Aula 75 for some time, bought one! There was an extra $5 amazon code I could use which brought it to $99

  • Looking at buying EPOMAKER Ajazz AK820 Pro 75%, what are the softer type switch?
Ajazz gift or ajazz flying fish

  • Great value, would have pulled the trigger if it's in some sort of monochrome colour scheme.

  • Looks like Shadow-S is OOO.

    Others are still available.

  • Love my ak820. I lubed switches and tuned stabs and it's wonderful.
Anyone used the ak820 hall effect?
The HE wired is also on sale for $98.60

  • i have one of those Ajazz 95% keyboard bought for $60 few years ago, best keyboard i've owned.
Been looking for a similar or better alternative, can anyone please recommend? thanks

  • +1

    Rip RAMA.

  • These are great keyboards for the price. Difficult to find a mechanical, wireless (2.4ghz/Bluetooth), screen, volume knob, at this price point.

Unfortunately I've owned two of these variants (TH80), and they generally bow in the middle after 3 months of usage. The latest one bowed after a month.

The typing experience is great though. I'd still recommend buying one of these regardless of how quickly I burned through mine

    • I also have TH80, no issues with bowing in the middle but I decide to clean the keyboard by taking the switches out and dusting it, after putting it back together function keys f9-f12 stopped working and now one of the keys are double keying… very annoying…

Reached out to Epomaker but they don't reply. :(

  • Unrelated to the current deal - and twice the price - but I bought a RK s98 recently and it is (to me at least) incredible. Especially for those like me that need a numpad. Currently on sale for $128

Aula F75 MAX is probably a better buy at $105 as well.

Alternatively you can pick up the Aula F75 for around $70 on AliExpress at the moment.

    • Is the only difference between the F75 Max and F75 the screen?

      • I suspect there's probably a much less crap MCU running the show on the F75 Max, as I know the one on the F75 does not have support for a screen. (Let alone enough memory for the framebuffer)
