issue ice machines is they go mouldy and smell which taints the ice …
any tips? usual vinegar and bicarb?

use cold clean water to start the ice process, once finished making ice, drain the machine and keep the lid slightly propped open so humidity doesn't get trapped.

As long as you follow these 3 steps which is a bit tedious, there should be no mould or smell

      • You need a youtube vid: "Follow these 3 simple steps …"

    • Does that happen even if they run 24/7?

      • No.. I think it's people using it to make some ice for a party, and then not using it again for a month.

I have one, and you just need to empty it of water and leave the lid open for a while so that it can air out.

    • vinegar works well.

    • I wash much everything with white wine first and then as a maintenance thing

Denture cleaning tablets. I use them to clean bottles as well.

      Your fridge … ?

A fridge that makes ice is how you know you've made it in life

We got a kogan brand of these ice makers and really haven't used it all that much. Good if you zip lock the ice and throw it in the freezer for future use but it's no replacement to the - 18c ice in the freezer.

This melts almost instantly when you throw it in room temp drinks.

Don't let the 12kg label fool you - this only has a 1.3L water tank. When the ice tray is full it holds about enough to fill a Frank Green 1.2L tumblers. Which is ok if your wife is the only one using it. Not so much if you want a cold drink too. Ask me how I know….

    I previously had a 2L machine that I found a lot better.

    • Thanks, that seems a bit misleading.

      • I thought it was pretty clear:

        1.3L Water tank
Up to 12kg ice making capacity in 24 hours

I have one. They're good. And $89 is close to the cheapest they get (occasionally ~$75 with a code on ebay)

Lot of people seem confused about how to use them. You have to run them for a few hours, emptying the ice into another container that you keep in the freezer. I use chilled water, and it still takes about 2 hours to make a batch. It's best run on a day when you're going to be home allday. You start it going in the morning and by the evening you have 5kg of ice ready.

I got mine so I could a)use up solar power and b) use the ice in a ice powered air cooler in the evening. In that respects, it's not the best idea, but it works. I'm thinking I might be able to modify it though. Cut out the bottom so the ice drops straight down into an esky and run an autofed water line

    • Ozbargin status level increased.

  • are there any ice makers that actually make a decent sized cube? all the at home ones i have seen are always such crappy small bits of ice that melt to quickly.
