Should I Churn to TPG or Buy a Modem and Go Elsewhere

Hi all,

Just hoping for some help.

After being with Internode for a while, I noticed that TPG has the 1/2 price off FTTB offers that include a free modem:

However, I heard that their service isn't great, they take $20 that they don't give back and it takes 30 days to cancel the service.

My question is if it's best to just suck it up and go with TPG or should I buy a decent modem and go with another provider. If so, any decent modem recommendations for someone who would probably want a 100 download speed and a decent provider.

Thank you in advance

  • Just get a Telstra gen 3 modem for under $40 on fbmp and move around to any of the isp

    • Why is this better than buying a cheap modem?
Having a look seems they are mostly $100-120 ish, still worth it at that price?
      Thanks

      • The Telstra gen 3 modem is quite good. Bargain at the price you get them on marketplace. Also your options are limited with NBN when it is not FTTP

    • I've only found the gen 2 modems at that price, all the gen 3 ones that are around that price are too far to travel to justify the cost.

    • Would you be able to point out some FBMP which has these for $40..?
Cannot find any Gen 3 close to this price anywhere…

I would avoid the Gen 3. I’ve had a few that have died after use and too many reports of it happening to others. I would suggest the Gen 2 Modem. Get the Technicolor that can be rooted.

Why because it’s a modem and router that will work with FTTB. You won’t need a bridge for it to work.

It will also allow you move from provider to provider with minimal issues.

    • Thanks KFP,

I"m new to this so how can I tell if the Technicolor can be rooted?

Well its more that there is 2 Telstra Gen2 Modems available. The LH1000 and Technicolour DJA0231

How can you tell them apart. I have a few tells. The side of the modem, the DJA 0231 has vents, the LH1000 does not. The power supply, the LH has a kind of support for the bottom of the unit and the sim card symbol on the back is different.

Don't worry too much about the rooting part, that's something you can look at if you get the right model.

        Hopefully this works.
        DJA0231 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5Y9CZ3M4lw
go to the 5min mark and you can see the model in the middle with the vents there.

        • I second this message. Avoid Gen 3 at all costs. Too many issues with power failure, Wifi antenna issues, etc. Not worth it.

I second getting a gen2 modem, root it and get more functionality out of the modem. Even if you don't root it, still a great modem! Make sure you get DJA0231 and not the LH1000 (these are a disaster)

Check your address, TPG FTTB isn't available everywhere. They're cheap plans you can't get 100mbps for $37 anywhere. The $20 'prepayment' is a rort, TPG might think it's smart, but it makes them look very dodgy.

    • FTTB is available to me and yeah the TPG plan is very cheap, which is why I'm considering them. While the $20 is a pain, I'm sure they would fold if I threatened to go to the ombudsmen right?

      • I managed to get it back because they changed the t&c after I joined. Now you have to agree to this term, so it makes it harder
