Japan Hotels with Onsen in Kobe and Hakone

Hi, I’m looking for recommendations on hotels at Kobe and Hakone with a private onsen or one that you can book for a private session*. So, if you stayed at an onsen you liked please let me know below.

*Looks like private onsens that can be booked are for hotel guests only so not really private.

Location: Kobe and Hakone
Price: 200-500 a night

Thanks

  • There is 3 best town/places to get onsen in japan. Google it.
One of them is near kobe.
Three of Japan's most famous and historically significant onsen (hot spring) towns are Kusatsu Onsen (Gunma), Gero Onsen (Gifu), and Arima Onsen (Hyogo).

  • For $200-$500 there are plenty… you shouldn't have an issue if you just do a basic search and do some research.

I'd be hunting for $100-$200 per night myself, that would be tricky and actually take some time to find.

    • With public onsen (inside hotel) in kyoto and osaka, aud 135 is possible.
Just go at early or late to the onsen and you get the whole pool for yourself.
I dont see the point of private. I mean how long can you stay inside? Not 3 hours… 30 mins max so why pay extra…

      • I've stayed in places with an indoor and outdoor onsen. Outside is cooler so you can go inbetween. Plus you can access throughout the day. Watching the sunrise and sunset without interruption.

        • Do you remember the names of these hotels?

          • @freeb1e4me: They were expensive resorts in Kyushu. Infact private onsen and cheap don't go together. Expect like $400+ a night.

      • I dont see the point of private

So my partner and I can experience it together. Separate male and female onsen not ideal for us

    • I'd be hunting for $100-$200 per night myself

Ideally yes but I’m having a hard time finding any that mention private onsen

  • We always stay at Green Plaza Hakone. Pretty good.

  • Would be a lot cheaper to go to the public onsen, if you don't mind the sight of naked salarymen.

  • You are unlikely to find an onsen in your room that is private and costs what you are after. However, there are plenty of places that either are near an onsen which allows for private bookings, or the ryokan/hotel has an onsen on site you can book.

Are you after meals as well (kaiseki usually) - those add to the cost but are worthwhile as an experience

  • I stayed at Livemax Resort Hakone-Ashinoko in Hakone before, all rooms have onsen bath so you don't have to leave your room. Room with breakfast and dinner probably cost ~$200-$300 depending on the day. Not the best hotel but good value for money.

  • I stayed at green plaza hakone… A little more expensive than your price range but not by much (when I went last year… Not sure what prices are now)

Private onsen, mt fuji views on a good day and food was great altho not the in room kaiseki ryori type.

  • You are more likely to find private onsen in a ryokan rather than a hotel (especially outdoor ones), I stayed at Gero Onsen Yunoshimakan once and got a private onsen room, the BEKKAN with open air-bath one here:

    https://www.yunoshimakan.co.jp/en/rooms

Was definitely not worth the money as I only used it once (bit of advice here, the private ones are a loooooot hotter than the public one, probably due to size) and ended up using the public one which was a lot bigger and there was literally nobody around (went around mid-March coincidentally today's date). I went to around 4-5 onsen on my trip and only once was there 1 person there (who was leaving as I went in), so maybe just time your trip? The best experience was probably the one at Enoshima Island Spa, where I went in later during the day (for the discount) and by the time I got to the onsen there was nobody around and I got it all to myself with a sunset view.
