Overseas Transaction Fee Charged for DLC Listed on Nintendo eShop AU

I bought a dlc recently from Nintendo eshop AU and was surprised overseas transaction fee charged on my account. I pay via paypal AU linked to local bank card. I contacted bank and was told merchant is listed in Singapore.

Is this common as i am about to buy few more digital switch games? Thank you.

  • That might be new. Our wiki listed nintendo.com.au (eShop) as not having charges https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/australian_sites_that_char…

Might have to update the information.

    It's not uncommon.

  • Yep, same with PSN.

  • Westpac strikes again

    • No. Hsbc.

      • That's a first.

      • Using credit card? Those always have fees. If you pay with Everyday Global Debit there is 0% int. fees

  • Yeah not surprised.

Buy gift cards locally and add to account

    • Yup, good suggestion. Thanks.

  • GST added, included or free?

    • GST included

  • what was the DLC?

    • Capcom arcade

  • Get the same thing with Playstation Store - although it's the "Australian" store, it's based in the UK so you cop the foreign transaction fee.

These days I avoid the fee by just not using my credit card on there. I buy the prepaid PS Store credit (usually keep an eye out for discounts on Ultimate Gift Cards or deals for bonus Woolies points on them etc, then use them on the JB Hi Fi website to buy PS Store credit) and just load that into my account. Don't pay the foreign transaction fee that way, and it works out cheaper too if you get a deal on the gift cards as I just described.

Alternately, get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees (eg the Bendigo Bank Mastercard).
