Tow Vehicle Hire or Best Way to Transport Trailer from SA to WA

Hi everyone, I’ve recently purchased a trailer with electric brakes in Adelaide and need to get it to Perth.

My original plan was to fly to Adelaide and hire a tow vehicle to tow the trailer back, but I’ve hit a roadblock. I cannot find any rental companies offering vehicles with towing capabilities for trailers.

I have a portable electric brake controller, so I just need a vehicle with a towbar to make it work.

If anyone has recommendations for rental companies that might help or any other solutions.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Buy tow car in SA. Sell when home.

    • I don't think that is a cost-effective option

Was buying a trailer in another state ever going to be cost-effective?

        • Yes. Trailers in WA are expensive for some reason. I bought mine in ACT a few hundred dollars cheaper.

  • Hi, I'm wondering if Airtasker might have someone that has a Vehicle with a Tow Bar that is going West…

I honestly don't know about the Insurance/Registration side of it, obvious bonus points if your Trailer has a Spare Tyre…

Thank you. I haven't thought about this option. I will check it out.

    Throw it on the train…

  • Maybe rent a Budget 12 seater, they seem to be the only rental with a towbar.

    • When I rang Budget, there was no one-way rental available with tow ball.

Ask CEVA how much they charge to transport it for you. Might be cost effective when you factor in rental car, fuel, time, hotels etc.

    • I have inquired with car carriers but they don't take trailers.

CEVA too? They literally list Trailer Transport on their website.

Almost as if you'd linked directly to it!

Try https://www.loadshift.com.au/ and post it on there. Probably get someone to put it on for a spilt load. I've used it before both for doing an odd job and also for moving my own stuff.

Drive there and tow it back.

    • Thank you for your reply. I was hoping to save time by flying one way.

  • How big a trailer are we talking?

Pop it on the train or load it on a semi/car transport

  • How big is it?

    What does it weigh empty?

    Is it registered?

Does it have to make it all the way to Perth, or can you take over part way?

The obvious best solution is to somehow get someone who is already going west, with a vehicle with a towbar to tow it. The problem is how to find someone who is doing that who would want to.

  • Buy a 20 year old rav4 with tow bar, definitely you can onsell it to unsuspecting work holiday tourists.

  • Could you sell and buy one locally instead?

It's an empty trailer right? How heavy can it be, anything with a tow bar should be able to tow it.

Thank you everyone for your input.
I have managed to find a truck that will bring the trailer back

  • Find a traveler on Gumtree who can take the job, covering their fuel costs and paying them a fee. I've successfully used this method to transport bulky items from SA to NSW, and it works perfectly.

  • I have rented Prados and similar from hertz that included redarc trailer brake controller.
