Where Does Everyone Park Their Utes?? 6m Long Garage Just Fits a Ute

Do people park their utes inside their garage every night? Most utes are 5.2-5.4m without a toebar. That leaves little room on either end of the ute. How are people fitting these big vehicles in garages with another car beside it?

If anyone is doing it, is it a tight fit? Easy to get in and out every morning inside a 2 car garage with another car next to it like an SUV?

What is the length of your ute and garage?

Would have thought most pickup trucks are parked on the street, and the garage is for the second family car plus storage.

  • 5.4 x 5.4 is the minimum double garage size in Aus (according to the building regulations) - but a more common size is 6 x 6.

Our Triton fits in our 6 x 6 ok - but you're right, it's a tight fit with the tow bar. Definitely no room to drop the tailgate, which is annoying

  • We're building a garage that is bigger

    toebar

    Put a sock on it

  • Mines probably never gonna fit in the … workshop.

I did remove a section of office space at the end of the garage during covid to get extra length in the garage, but with storage down the side its too narrow.

Fortunate to have a really large garage. Unfortunate to have hoarding tendencies and a penchant for starting multiple projects that end up in the garage space.

Get a bigger garage. Then you can park all your cars and still have space for a workshop.

I really wish they made a modern Brumby.

    Get a smaller car.

    My Ute - 5.7m
    My Garage - 8m

I still have enough room to park my Wife's SUV and walk around the cars plus open doors. Still have a 1m work bench behind the ute and can have the tailgate down.

Even in a Standard Garage, I could just fit my VE Commodore! When we were renting I had to back in my car first, then back my wife's SUV in next too it (very close). Then if I ever wanted my car, I had to move the wife's out first.

The house we bought the original owners built an additional oversized garage which is great. Our next place will need more shed space for sure.

Most of our neighbours only park 1 car in their garage due to space.

  • sun shade, but if i need to it does fit under carport too

This is why houses are bigger these days. So they are deep enough from front to back for a garage that a ute can fit in without poking out at the front or back and not being able to close either the front or back garage door. That's the case with my place.

Lol. My neighbour just bought one of those emotional support vehicles and didn't bother to measure it.

The first day he had it, it was too high for the roller door, so he had to make up some brackets to move the upper limit switch to give it another inch or so. Then, when he eventually got the rolling Viagra suppository into the garage, it is about a foot too long.

Now he parks it in the garage and just runs the garage door down into the tray. It's hilarious if I come home late at night and it looks like the garage door is only down as far as the tray, when is still about 4~5 feet off the ground.

The only thing that stop people getting into his garage is that the back of the truck is so wide that it fill the whole width of the doorway with about an inch or 2 either side

Yeah I have no sympathy for people with big cars. Such an awful and sad trend.

Well, i am sure it is easy to crawl under the car. Someone will do that sooner or later.

I see in a short one time, someone using a ramp that enabled him to park his car into smaller space.

All the bloody annoying tradies seem to leave their utes in the no-parking zone in front of my house, blocking the view and greatly causing the chances of an accident as people turn the corner. I never thought I'd catch myself saying this, but it's about bloody time some parking cops started doing the rounds and sent these guys a message.

My triton just fits in the garage with about 30cm to spare, hence I had a carport put on the side of the garage for it. As others have said the garage is for the wife’s car and storage.

  • Back when I had it, I managed to fit my Hilux cab chassis inside my garage, think it was just short of 6m. Reversed in, got out and pushed it till the tray just touched the wall and then I could wind the garage door down with just enough clearance for my ankles to squeeze past! If it had a tow bar or bull bar then I would have had to park it outside

Most double garages in modern houses are around 5.5 wide by 6m deep. Not enough to comfortably fit in 2 large cars. However, 95% of home buyers don’t pay attention to garage dimensions ( amongst many other important things) until they attempt to park the cars. I purposely made my garage 6.5x7 and its just the right size without sacrificing too much frontage.

From what I see, most home buyers don't even use their garage for their cars, it is just full of storage. I can easily point out a handful of houses in the 3 streets to my house that park all of their cars outside because their garage is full of stuff.

That’s true, but a contributing factor is most double garages cannot park 2 large comfortably, so they park 1 car+ storage space and 2nd car goes in driveway or nature strip.

They should have purchased a bigger house.

  • SA government announced a few months back that they're planning to change the building approval rules to mandate more and larger garages on new builds because people keep building garages that are too small to park modern cars (ie stupidly oversized SUVs, utes, etc) so they end up parking them in the street and cluttering up the streets. Not sure if this is a national thing or something other states are looking at but, if it's not then it should be.

We have a double garage on our house and it fits our 2 cars fine but we've got modestly sized cars: a Mazda 3 and a BMW 3 series. The BMW only just fits, though - if I'd gone for a 5 series it would be too long, and an SUV wouldn't have enough clearance under the roller door. So it's good enough for our needs, but statistically the chances are that if / when we ever sell this house and move then the new owner will be parking their stupid SUVs in the street.
