BILLY's are a must-have recommendation for collectors. However, in 2022 they changed the higher quality wood veneer to be paper foil instead and the quality dip really shows.

I had to get 2 of them picked up and replaced because they were scratched straight from factory, and they're definitely not as durable as the old ones over time. Colours are also different if you have old ones and looking to expand. Suggest check them out in-store before buying.

Examples of scratches on almost every single panel (they're 100% not due to unpacking):-

AYO WTF THIS IS AN OPTION???? Fffffuuu

Yes! If you ever get any defective/damaged IKEA items, they'll arrange a replacement and pickup for free. Courier literally drops off a new one and takes the old one away. You don't even need to disassemble or repackage it up, they'll take the bits as-is.

Even the standalone extra shelves you can buy separate had scratches: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/255280/120376/img_1731…

It is one thing for a store to offer cheap furniture, but for the furniture to be scratched badly is poor indeed.
Thanks for showing that Ikea does indeed offer a proper guarantee on their furniture.

Great now I feel even more salty about that one time I had a damaged billy shelf , but just ended up chucking it and leaving it as a double height space instead on the bottom shelf.

Would like to say cost cutting but in IKEA's case the sustainability initiative ethos is a bit more believable than Kmart etc …

Would like to say cost cutting but in IKEA's case the sustainability initiative ethos is a bit more believable than Kmart etc …

Personally, I don't believe it - I previously worked in emissions analysis and reporting earlier in my career. I don't specifically have experience with furniture, but for these kinds of goods, the biggest source of emissions are in transport and logistics and in manufacturing.

Given this, the biggest sustainability move would be to produce quality furniture that people would only need to purchase once and will last a long time. This saves on the repeated transport, logistics, and manufacturing emissions which are really not that impacted by a change in the materials.

Basically, IKEA's logic is to sell you something worse quality, for the same price, with probably like 10% less emissions (so they can claim "sustainability"), just for it to need to be replaced more frequently (and only cost the consumer more, and the environment more in the long run, of course, at IKEA's benefit).

thanks for this info. I absolutely hate the IKEA paper foil garbage. it's essentially cardboard. i have an old IKEA desktop which is proper gluelam acacia wood. new ones are empty in the middle with cardboard inside.

Yeah IMO they really took the whole paper honeycomb foil filling thing too far. In too many of their products and not like the price much better.

    • Wait what…they’re not veneer anymore?

Is that across the entire range ? When did it change

    • yeah i echo this as well too - love the billy collection but yeah when they changed the material over it was disappointing because the old ones was definitely durable and better.

i have the black oak tall ones and make it into a corner bookshelf when i saw this in the display at ikea and thought thats pretty cool to have at home

Not available for either delivery or pick up in Melbourne. Only showed as Display in store.

The discounted price is only for this colour which is not too great. I wanted to buy it in Adelaide store but did not as the colour and finishing is not too good.

Been eyeing one of the 200cm ones off

    *cries in Perth

A bit of a tangent but it might be worth checking out a few op shops in the area before buying a new bookcase. The ones around us tend to have decent solid wood ones fairly regularly.

  • Thanks, but OOS in VIC
