Orion Wireless Cameras from Bunnings Experiences

Hi all,

Moving house soon and planning to replace my very old Arlo cameras with something new. I was looking at Eufy but I am very tempted by the cheap Orion cameras from Bunnings. Simply for the fact that while the Grid Connect automation app is not great, I like that I can easily get lights, fans, switches etc. and of course cameras all from Bunnings and run it all from the one app. I’ve got some Grid Connect lights at the moment and they are fine.

Any experiences to share? I know I could setup a complicated fancy home automation setup with another system but frankly I can’t be bothered.l and this seems functional, easy, and expandable.

  • No ability to run cabling and do a proper POE Camera system?

I understand what you mean about the all in one solution, but I have my Tuya devices in one app (which you can use with some Grid Connect Devices) and then my Reolink Camera System.

  • I would stay away from cloud based camera systems like the Grid Connect ones. I had an Arlo system a while ago and the delay on the "live" feed when viewing it locally was horrendous and borderline false advertising as a camera system that is practically usable. As geekcohen said, Reolink are terrific. They have such a variety of different camera models and types, so if you can do POE to some cameras but cant to others you can mix and match them. Theres no lag or delay that Arlo and other cloud systems have too. If you eventually upgrade your smart home to something like Home Assistant they will also easily integrate with that to have the "1 app to control everything"

Biggest issue I had with my Orion camera was the time it too from detection > recording > notification > opening the app to view. 99% of the time the incident wasn't captured because it took too long for the camera to start recording. Which meant that I could only see the postie walking away or the sound of someone who's already opened the side gate that was next to the camera.

Then you needed to wait 30-60 seconds to open the app and connect to the live view of the camera. When again, the person or incident had already passed.
