Buying New Car. Now or Wait for EOFY?

I am looking at buying a new car soon (Pajero or Triton) happy to discuss.

I am not a people person, and I do not want to sell my car online and having to deal with actual buyers (ugh)
I am considering going with Motorscout to get me a new car and sell mine, or wait for EOFY and maybe do it then.

I know some of you are car dealers on OZBargain, so I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Budget: Ideally under $60k for the new car (SUV or Ute - 4x4)
Will be used for some city driving, but mostly camping, light 4x4 driving, and long distance highway driving.

No towing, we camp in tents, but storage is important (hence why the biggish size cars)

The Mitsubishis look well priced and I like the 10 years warranty.

I briefly considered the Jimny XL but I think it'll be too small and kinda not good for long distance highway driving (I might still take it for a test drive though)

Anyways, thanks for coming to my TedTalk, I'm keen to hear what the expert have to say. (I am absolutely not an expert in cars, I just read way too many reviews and youtube videos)

pajero exceed is best. i was going to get the gsr, but the gsr is an exceed with more cosmetic outside stuff (Pajero Sport bonnet emblem, Black grille & headlight garnish, Black roof & roof rails, and GSR tailgate badge). having the huge name on my front bonnet irritates me, lol.

the pajero sport also won best 4 cylinder 4x4. i love how you can switch from 2 wheel to 4 wheel on the go, instead of having to pull over and stop to change modes. also the exceed has the digital display and not the old analogue speedometer.

i love how you can switch from 2 wheel to 4 wheel on the go

Many 4wds have been able to do this for years. In a straight line, under 100kph

Ahh, but the Mitsi trick is that you can do it driving hard surfaces and not wind up the transmission.
Others do this too, but at the Mitsi price point its a pretty decent thing to have if you travel with them.

      What about the Outlander?
      What's the biggest difference?
The price difference is significant though

Also the Exceed is at $65k, so qyuite a bit over my budget of under $60k

its worth paying extra 5k for the exceed, its a huge jump from the lower trims.

to ease the pain think of it as a 10 year purchase and not just a 1 day purchase.
so that is $500 extra a year over the 10 years or $1.36 more a day for 10 years.
it really isn't much more to pay for something you will have for a long time. buy once cry once, and you don't have regret later thinking i should have just bought the exceed over the GLX or GLS

        • +1

Going from under $60k to $65K, while it is "only $500 extra a year" it is still a 10% increase to my budget.

          • @Nuclearvodka: more like 7% more. you pay more in taxes when you go shopping.
go to the dealership and sit in both the exceed and the gls or glx. you will see the difference and thank me later :)

Take them for a drive and narrow down what you want first

Then deal with the sales/pricing side of things

    • @spackbace What is the tips on hagglinga new toyota Prado, go for the one in the stock? not though the order process?

  • I remembered Spackbace was an auto connoisseur!
You're a car salesman or you own a dealership right?

Is EOFY the best time to get a good deal or is that no longer the case?

Nissan has some pretty crazy deals on the Navara as well (2024)

    • The discount tree roughly goes like this… (from most discount probability to least/zero chance of a discount)

      • run out models (last year’s/previous model stock)
      • clearance/factory sales program models
      • dated floor/holding stock (usually 90 days)
      • demo models
      • unpopular trim levels/colours
      • in stock popular models
      • out of stock, custom or factory orders
      • very popular models with a customer wait list
      • “fixed price” sales
      • +2

So any price reduction depends on levels of old stock, new stock arriving, colours, trim levels, dealer stock etc
So OP might find the specific model and color they want is in demand and hence wont see the reduced prices OP is hoping for.
Sales are created to clear overstocked or less popular models, colours etc

Best time to buy is when OP needs the car.
Take your time and shop around.

      • I would say "very popular models with a customer wait list" is typically worse than "fixed price" because the dealer almost always happen to have a "used" car for $10k mark up on RRP. A fixed price one usually don't mark up at all.

        • Well, yes, I can kind of agree. "Oh, no, we cant get our hands on a RAV 4 until 2029… but we do have this used 2019 one here for $10k more than the new 2029 model…"

The other thing is that, even if you do get a "discount" on a wait list vehicle… somehow about 2 weeks out from delivery there will be an "unavoidable price rise/currency fluctuation" and the car you got a (maybe very minor) discount on is suddenly $5k more expensive than when you signed the paperwork…

2nd hand MUX in your budget

    • a base model 4x4 is around $55 new.

  • Sure, but as I said, I don't want to do any of the "talking" and dealing with "real" people, hence either going with motorscout (they only do brand new) or wait for EOFY and try to get a deal from a dealership.

I'm autistic as (profanity), and I can't be bothered negotiating with people selling their car.

    • 2nd hand through a dealer? Pay the advertised price or do it all through email?

    • Thanks for the neg.

Not sure if because I said I'm autistic, but… Well I am.

And having to sell and buy my car privately fills me with anxiety.

      But thanks for your concern.

    • +1

I didn't neg, but the second-hand suggestion above doesn't have to be a private sale. You know many dealers sell used cars, right?

      • Yeah, I might consider that actually.

It's just that Motorscout don't do second hand, but I guess they can still sell my car for me.

        • +2

The dealer can give you a trade-in price which will be much the same

          • @spackbace: This. Any 'car buying' dealer will buy at trade prices. Otherwise they wouldnt make any money on the vehicle.

    • Get an ex gov fleet MU-X from pickles/Manheim.

      • Really?

How do you make sure you're not buying a lemon?

You can't take for test drive or have a mechanic inspect it can you?

  • +2

I bought a new car a few years ago (2023) through Motorscout, and had a really good experience.

I knew which car I wanted, and how much I was willing to pay. The process with Motorscout was super fast, and within 24hrs I had the car ordered with the dealership.

Similar to you, I didn't have the time or energy to go around to various dealerships to try and negotiate a price that may have a been a bit cheaper than what Motorscout was able to organise.

  • +1

    No towing

Don't put it out of the question and make some considerations for the future.

  • +1

If you don’t need to buy a new car, you might want to consider a used 2022 or 2023 Prado that still has some factory warranty remaining. With the new models now available, there are some great bargains on the market. The Prado is a well-known model, making parts, servicing, and outback traveling support widely accessible

  • +1

If it helps, I've heard that there's a glut of used cars on the market at the moment - might be worth considering a late model of the car you want rather than new - may save yourself a pile of cash.

  • Buy a new car from dealer beter time is before end of the month on 29 or 30 each month.( try bargain as much as you can ).

    • +2

Only if you can take delivery by the end of the month

  • +3

I reckon the days of timing your purchase to get the best deal are over. Its more about stock and demand levels.

You might find that other buyers holding off until end of FY slightly increase demand and reduce discounting.
