Looking for an Alternative Budget Mobile Provider instead of Aldi Mobile

Been using Aldi mobile the last few years as I'm not a huge user on my phone and their cheapest, smallest monthly plan met my needs. But over the last couple of years they axed the plan I'm on and then move my to the next cheapest one. Then a while later they axe that plan and move me onto a more expensive one. Now the value doesn't seem to be there. I even saw they've axed a bunch of their 365 day expiry plans.

Also I find dealing with their customer service painful. Overseas call centers with poor communication skills who are more hellbent on verifying every bit of your identity before they'll address your actual problem. When it comes to fixing the actual issue, their staff are somewhat useless and takes ages to get something sorted.

Thinking it might be time to switch because being a long time customer. Is there any other half decent providers out there who you can get a small month to month plan from?

    • I only need around 5gb data. I'm around wifi at work or home most of the day and don't watch videos or anything off mobile data.

I never make international calls so don't really need it. I'm mostly just calling other mobiles and the occasional landline.

Network I don't really care about as long as it's reliable.

If Vodafone coverage is decent in your area, then Kogan Mobile's lowest yearly plan may suit you.

Downside is that you are not guaranteed to renew at $120 every year.
You have to hunt for bargains in the final weeks of your plan every year so you don't pay full price.

    • Are Kogan any good? I was with them about ten years back and was on their cheapest plan. But then they axed it and screwed over a lot of their customers and I ended up having to move to Aldi.

      • Totally dependent on Vodafone coverage in your area.

It also depends on your appetite for searching for Kogan Mobile deals in the final 6 weeks leading up to your plan expiry.

If you leave auto recharge on and end up paying full price every year, then it isn't worth it.

  • Why not just use the Aldi PAYG plan? $15 for 365 days.

OP needs ~5GB of data per month.

PAYG would not be suitable for that.

Different people have different definitions of light/heavy usage, that's why numbers like that are important.

    • Yeah I've tried it in the past but I found using the data on those plans would eat through it in about a month. I ended up moving to the monthly plans.

Aldi use to have a bigger plans on the 365 where you get a whole bunch of data. But they seem to of axed it.

      • Boost also used to have a lower data yearly plan that was axed.
If other Telstra resellers did anything similar, then that would suggest Telstra wants more people buying more expensive plans with more data and doesn't care if they end up alienating poorer people or people with more modest needs.

A lot of industries are axing their cheapest offerings and replacing them with more expensive ones, or even jacking up the prices of existing higher tier stuff, it's not just telcos.
