Most Efficient Way to Purchase New iPhone Using Flybuys Points

Over the years I have accumulated a few hundred thousand Flybuys points. The app shows the value as ~$2000. I have never redeemed my points.

I'm after a new iPhone and I wanted to know the best way to get the most bang for my points, i.e. buy gift cards first, buy direct from retailer etc? Would I be able to get a price beat from Officeworks and then redeem my points?

  • I think you can convert FlyBuys points to OfficeWorks gift cards. But better yet, I would research and find the interval of the Coles cycle on offering bonus points for buying gift cards (such as this https://www.reddit.com/r/AusGiftCardDeals/comments/1gdvfso/2…) and then you could reap extra points when purchasing.

You can convert the points to flybuys dollars then use it to any places that accept the dollars, thus not just ofw. Note they need you to bring the physical card to use

Flybuys Dollars may be used in a transaction at a participating store as payment or part payment for purchases (excluding gift cards, iTunes cards and smoking/tobacco product purchases).

  • As a fun exercise I did it via velocity. Right now there’s a 15% bonus for the first manual transfer from flybuys. Converts at 2 flybuys to one velocity. $2000 flybuys works out to about 230K velocity. An iPhone 16 is 231K velocity plus $325.

Fun but prolly not worth it

From the way I see it, you have three options:

    1. Convert your Flybuys points into Flybuys Dollars,1 then go in-store to Officeworks with your physical Flybuys card. When it is time to pay, ask to pay by card, then swipe your Flybuys card on the EFTPOS terminal (and enter the PIN you set). You should be okay to do a price beat before paying using Flybuys Dollars.

    2. Convert your Flybuys points into a gift card on the Flybuys Rewards Store that can be redeemed at a retailer selling iPhones, then use those gift cards to purchase the iPhone. For example, you can redeem Flybuys points for Officeworks gift cards2 or for TCN gift cards (and some of these TCN gift cards can be used at JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys).3

    3. Redeem your Flybuys Dollars on shops that you usually do in-store at participating businesses (e.g. Coles, Kmart, Target, Shell Coles/Reddy Express), then use the money saved towards buying an iPhone from any retailer of your choice (or use that money saved towards buying discounted gift cards that can be used at a retailer selling iPhones).

    1. The maximum amount of Flybuys Dollars you can have loaded onto your Flybuys card at any time is $4,999.

    2. I would personally avoid this, because you can only redeem for physical Officeworks gift cards that need to be mailed to you. That would add at least a couple of weeks and the potential of activated gift cards going missing in the mail…

    3. The Good Guys would not be ideal if you are looking to purchase the iPhone online, as they have strict gift card redemption limits on their website. On the other hand, it would be a lot easier to redeem multiple gift cards on the JB Hi-Fi website. If you have no idea what I am referring to, have a look here and scroll down to the FAQs for redeeming TCN gift cards in-store or online at JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys.

    • Option one sounds like the best option for me as I can take advantage of a price beat and simply pay like I would normally pay but instead of a credit card I would use my flybuys card.

I recalled seeing all these offers over the years for 20x points on giftcards etc which I never really looked into as I've never redeemed Flybuys points. So just wanted to know if there's anything more specific I can do to get more value.

      • The Flybuys Rewards Store occasionally runs 20x bonus points offers on selected TCN gift cards (e.g. this deal, which was the most recent one), but I have never seen these deals apply to Officeworks gift cards, and I think it has been a while since those deals applied to TCN gift cards that can be redeemed at JB Hi-Fi or The Good Guys. TCN gift cards currently do not include (and have never included) Officeworks as a participating retailer.

You may also see bonus Flybuys points deals or discounts on gift cards in-store at Coles (e.g. 10% off Celebration gift cards, 10% off Ultimate Students gift cards),1 but you cannot use Flybuys Dollars as a payment method when purchasing those gift cards, as that is against the Flybuys Dollars terms and conditions. If you attempt this anyway at Coles, you should see an Invalid Product Mix error on the EFTPOS terminal.

        1. I mention these gift cards, because they can be redeemed at Officeworks. You should be fine to ask for a price beat and then redeem multiple Ultimate gift cards (featuring Officeworks) or Celebration gift cards at Officeworks in-store.

  • So reads like the best use of flybuy points is to convert to flybuy dollars and spend in-store as card payment. Hmm
