Note that Brother is now updating OzBargain's favourite printer brand to not work with non-Brother inks and toners.
I'd suggest firewalling your printer and Windows Brother drivers to stop this firmware update happening automatically.

Not updating the printer has been a thing since printers could be updated.
If your printer works fine, why would it need a firmware update? It's not open to the internet so security updates aren't critical. The only use can be for the mother company to enshitify the product and ban more and more cartridges from being used.
