USB Cables That Work for 2023 Prado Android

G'day everyone, I've recently picked up a 2023 Prado.

Android CarPlay only works with a WIRED connection (thanks, Toyota). I've been told the USB cord needs to be 'genuine' Samsung. I'm sure it doesn't need to be as a lot of phones aren't sold with cords anymore. So, which USB cord will work? anyone got any models? Links? Help?

Cheers!

  • Have you tried a non Samsung cable first? Most of this recommended cables is a "get out clause"

    • Yes I have. The dealer got his 'sangsung' cable and it worked fine.

    • Thanks! I'll have a look

    Who told you?

The obvious thing to do before you spend money is to try a cable to see if it works. Takes less time and trouble than creating a post here.

  • Look for a mention of supporting data transfer, not just for charging.

    • I tried one of those too. A Cygnet one, brand spanking USB-C. no joy :(

Usb C port on the car? In some cars, the usb c port is only for power charging only. For android auto or car play, you need to use the usb A port.

        • Not for Toyota, who got with the times and moved to USB-C late 2022 onwards

Any decent cable that supports data should work. There is nothing 'special' with a Samsung branded cable.

Get your box of cables out and start trying.

What error do you get when it doesn't work?

If it doesn’t support data, how will it know what error to say?

It won't do anything, just charge.

Sounds like the OP needs a USB-C cable that support PD.

  • There are 2 types of USB cables you need to be aware of: Charge and Sync.

Most of the cables on sale are just for charging, as they only have the wires in them for you to charge a USB device, these are popular as they are usually cheaper.

The next type are "Sync" cables, which includes the wires for transmitting data, they will be marketed as for syncing and data transfer, they will also say they are compatible with android auto/apple car play.

Cygnet is a budget brand, and the cable you got is most probably just for charging. Read the product description, and they will just talk about how great their cables are for charging, and will not mention any data transfer.

  • Try whatever cable you have. If it doesnt work, you need one with data capability.

  • Had a 'problem' with my new car and android phone connecting consistently, it would often just not connect.
Problem solved with a short (30cm) USB3 (blue) cable.
    No problems since..

  • I have a Carlinkit 4.0 in both my Pajero and my Golf. They work great with both AndroidAuto and Carplay. I believe the Carlinkit 5.0 is even better.

Around $55 for the 5.0 and $48 for the 4.0 on AliExpress. Slightly more on ebay
