How to Become a Profit Making YouTuber?

Has anyone here managed to become a profit making YouTuber?

Please share your experience and the equipment you use. I don't have a YouTube channel and I just upload from time to time videos made on my phone on various topics; travel, food, animal and tech stuff. I just do it for fun and share larger videos with close friends. I recently noticed I have got 200+ subscribers.

Now I am retired and maybe, just maybe, I can be a real YouTuber? :)

    https://riverside.fm/blog/how-much-do-youtubers-make#:

You need way more than 200 subs to really see a profit.

There is no secret hack, you just need to play the Yt Algorithm https://www.reddit.com/r/NewTubers/comments/1f40j0n/youtube_…

  • +24

i imagine it continually pumping out content with click bait titles and click bait thumb nails

    • +10

      click bait titles

With this one simple trick you can make huge profits on YouTube.

      • +1

You will take Australia by storm!

        • +3

iconic australian youtuber uses this one simple hack!!!!

    • +1

Sexually suggestive thumbnails to suck in the thirsty loser crowd.

      • That is counterproductive in the YT game, because while your click through rate might spike your % of video watch time will plummet and thus you will be thrown to the abyss on the suggested content algorithm.

If your gonna thirst trap people, you need to follow through 😂

Isn't it just like any other job? work hard and you get rewards?

    • +3

A lot more gambling involved in whether there'll be any payoff for that hard work with stuff like youtube.

      • +1

Sounds like a real job then…

        • +2

Think you misunderstood my point. I was highlighting that it involves way more gambling for whether you'll get any payout at all for your work than traditional jobs.

    • +3

It depends entirely on whether what you're doing is popular or not.

Like a geologist spendings hours each week detailing rocks isn't going to be as popular as the girl filming an hour of how to maximise glute size.

    • +4

Pretty much this. I worked in the industry (professional services related… I wasnt making videos), and the number of people who would say stuff like "wow, I'd love to make money and get free stuff like those youtubers".

The ones making money are working tirelessly coming up with ideas, hustling for sponsorships, fulfilling those sponsorship contracts, filming, editing, diversifying their income streams, marketing, etc.

Also plenty of wannabes who give off the impression they're making money and aren't (hell, you can rent fake 'private jet' interior sets to pretend you're living the high life)

Not something I'd have the energy or interest in doing, and I suspect most people are the same.

      • Youtubers work harder, some even employ teams behind them, they put up millions of hit-and-miss videos and then put their rewards as nice holiday pics or cars or whatever. For us, its look like little effort but its not, you need to do bit more than one hit wonder. If you have the same effort on what you are good at, you can achieve the same. Since OP asking how to do it in a forum, its not for you OP.

  • There are YouTube channels that cover this topic.
What do other successful YouTube channels do?
What channels do you consistently go back to and why?
Make content that people like or find useful (target your niche).
Be consistent and expect it to take ages before you see any rewards.

I can recommend this: How Much Youtube REALLY Paid Me (as a full time YouTuber) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPS7Ys9pXKo

Specific to music, but this one is also worth a look: How Much YouTube Paid Me For 4,700,000 Views and why… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mjk4QUkwSU

TLDR: Even if you're successful you'll still need a second job.

  • +12

It’s a lot more involved than you realise but can be done with very basic equipment (ie: any decent phone that shoots in 4k)

It’s relatively easy to make it monetised if you have decent content and consistency.
    Most people don't though…

To get monetised on YT you need 1000 followers and either:
4000 watch hours - long video format - over a 365 day period.
    Or
10 million short views in a 90 day period.

Even if you get monetised, making it profitable is the even more difficult part.

Then you need to factor in at the beginning you will get next to no views till you get consistent or post an absolute banger of a video.

And while one viral video can do wonders for followers count and views, if those followers are not drawn to come back and watch your videos again its pointless.

And finally, even once you hit these goals - while you might make money off of it, the work involved vs what you earn doesn’t make it worthwhile unless your seeing consistent big numbers and create merchandise.

    YMMV.

  • Bend over the bridge!

    • +2

Or, maybe OP could create a viral video of bending an actual bridge!

      • Civil Engineers hate him!

  • +9

LMAO - you need about 100k subs before you even consider making a serious buck and you need multiple videos of >1million views

it is much harder now then it was 10-15 years ago because youtube has gotten 'so big' it doesnt need to support small content creators

unless you are already 'somewhat' famous and known or have an idea that you can replicate over a long period of time it is the same thing as asking how do i become a movie star or pop star

    • or prn star as granny. J. Holmes, P. North, Woodman, G. Lynn, all still can perform good enough.
      Stormy stormed the trompet recently.

      • I feel ashamed that I know all of these people, add R. Jeremy to that list. But there's too much competition in this field now, with all the free sites and OF content. It's better to focus on very niche, but still interesting, content to build a big following.

    • +2

asking how do i become a movie star or pop star

Two great ideas for another forum post!

  • +1

You need to really study the algorithm and exploit it fully.

Clickbait content will get you views, might hurt your channel's reputation somewhat but if all you care about is engagement, that's a minor side effect in the grand scheme of you content.

Lots of copycat content creators out there, it would take you years these days to actually make a decent living/ROI unless you wanna play the very long game or you do something that is super unique/niche and you actually garner an audience just for you that keep watching your stuff.

Setup a channel called MrBoast and benefit from all the mis clicks from the MrBeast channel :P

    • Good idea although you’d want to have some kind of content to gain subscribers.

I reckon best bet is just churning out rage bait.

Came across a Facebook page yesterday that always posts clips from old anime but purposely mis-titles the clip/series - just to earn rage/engagement from anime enthusiasts. Or those pages that post gameplay without title - and then when people ask, either give wrong answer , or say something stupid like , check video description (it’s not in the description)

    • +3

Rage bait is legitimately a solid way to become popular (for the wrong reasons) and viral purely through engagement.

People don’t realise that the thumbs down is still engagement as is posting how stupid the creator is 😂

my AI channel just pulls news feeds and makes videos from the text and then uses the photos or related photos from the news story
makes 4-7 videos a day automatically
    makes me 5k-11k a month.

    • +18

God I hate these videos but well done.

      • LOL sorry

        • $5k seriously? Do you mind to coach me how to do it? Thanks

            @CyberMurning: https://store.training.tafensw.edu.au/product-category/iat/i…
youll need to make your own news feed from an RSS and create a voiceover - eg:
            https://www.narakeet.com/app/text-to-audio/?projectId=c4ba33…

write from Pyton script to pull the photos from IG/X news site and use as content for the video

spam tiktok/ig/fb reels with "partial news stories" then link to youtube

            • @Wiadro: Amazing! This is the real passive income that we all dreamed about

              • +1

@CyberMurning: it took a long time till it starting making decent money and sometimes you don't make much money, as you are depending on the news it pulls, I use hashtag data from X or breaking news from cnn/cnbc/news au

I've made the most money since the trump election.
its basically clickbait news videos tbh

                • +2

@Wiadro: Ah yeah only when there are breaking news the hits will spiked up. But even $2k a month is still decent money how many eneloops I can afford!

    • What's your channel called?

    • +1

You're filling the internet with garbage, but I applaud your extremely low effort way of making pretty good money. You make AI garbage, boomers and bots view it, and advertisers are left holding the bag paying for ads no one watches.

  • +3

    I have 2 dead channels.

One I made ~100 videos in 2019-2022. It had 350 subs when I left it to rot. It's gained 300 subscribers since then :-P. 350 more and it will monetise if there is enough hours of viewing.

The other lasted a few months and 10 videos and I realised there wasn't enough light in my work area. That had 30 subs. 2 years later it has 165.

NB: I really dislike editing so every video was a PITA for me.

It's all about decent content, decent quality and audience engagement.

I've noticed recently that I've stopped watching a lot of the channels I used to like as they've run out of content and talk too much.

    Good luck with your channel

  • +3

Only fans will give faster profit making

    • +1

      But OP need good feets

      • Use AI generated feet. We're almost at the point where real OnlyFlans stars are no longer required.

  • It's called Youtumour

  • If you're charismatic then people will watch and donate to your streams. You need a certain amount of view hours to even qualify for the dono button though. And you are competing with many millions of young people who are cuter and funnier than you wanting to achieve the same.

    • +1

You’re better off trying to make your own content that you’re passionate about that appeals to a niche. The mainstream content is obviously more lucrative but competition is makes it basically impossible to break-in

      • I do see some kids on YouTube who basically clone other famous YouTubers, right down to the style of writing, speaking, particular inflections, etc.

I also noticed some very old videos that looked like they are copying famous YouTubers but the videos were made before those YouTubers even made their own account. So maybe those famous YouTubers took "inspiration" from other accounts and made a success of the formula. Wouldn't surprise me if the only original video on YouTube was this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw&vl=en

I don't have a YouTube channel and I just upload from time to time

I don't understand this. You can't upload without a YouTube channel.

videos made on my phone on various topics; travel, food, animal and tech stuff.

You won't get many subscribers with random stuff unless you happen to be an absolute genius vlogger with heaps of charisma. Otherwise, you need to choose a content category or a specific subject.

E.g. category: tech reviews, gaming, politics, clickbait, pranks, music, walking tours, travel, documentary, etc.

E.g. specific subjects: how to renovate kitchens, how to build PCs, productivity tips, etc.

People will only subscribe if they know what they're signing up for.

  • +1

Good luck with that. MrBeast has 369 million subscribers and not even he has become a prophet.

    • I just saw on his channel he said he donated $5millions to one person (achievement) if true he must be making millions a week

    • And here I'm, haven't subscribed to any YouTube videos lol

I received the offer for partnership back in 2009. Ad revenue was easy back then with a whole lot less views overall and a lack of adblocking. These days you really need to be big with a lot of views and engagement.

    • The Car Care Nut Channel (TCCN) is notorious for this. He has great content on maintaining Toyota's, but the videos are far too long.

  • For those in Australia actually making taxable* money out of YouTube:

How much per month are you making? Aprox … Please …

    *AKA: real income.

    • ive had to register for GST and turn it into a pty ltd last month

    • I make zero dollars per month from the zero videos that I have not uploaded to my non-existent YouTube channel. I hope this information is useful to you.

  • +11

I work as a full time YouTuber (and don't make AI videos like the other guy)

To actually make YouTube a full time job, you'll probably have to average at least 1 million views per month - though this varies depending on what your channel covers, as that affects ad rates. But in general from 1 million views per month, you would make a little over $60k AUD per year off AdSense (YouTube ads)

At that size you could probably supplement your income with other sources as well, like channel memberships/Patreon for fans, affiliate links, other ads, etc

The problem is getting to that size. You'll need to work extremely hard and probably do the equivalent of a full time job (or part time if you're lucky) unpaid for multiple years to get your foot in the door. It'll help if you have other skills or unique attributes you can bring to the table - because you are competing on a world scale, so if you're already an expert in a field that will help - but if not, you'll have to get on the grind and try and improve your skills.

Gear doesn't really matter too much when starting out because modern phones have great quality. But audio quality is MUCH more important than video quality, and good lighting is also crucial.

There's a very good chance you will never make it, so my advice would be to have fun making videos and enjoy the process - which it sounds like you're already doing. Then if it never takes off at least you've enjoyed yourself and maybe learned some things. And if it starts to gather some momentum you won't be burnt out from the grind.

I was eventually able to do it full time because of years of hard work, but also a huge contribution from luck and just being in the right place, making the right content at the right time

    • +1

Nice - what type of content do you post? Cheers

    • +1

Thank you, @Scorpus, for your detailed response, and congratulations on your YouTube success. Your insights have led me to realize that pursuing a "second career" as a serious YouTuber isn't for me. Instead, I'll continue creating videos for fun and enjoying my retirement life. Thanks again!

  • I recently noticed I have got 200+ subscribers.

    recently retired

    Oh boy here we go.

    • Boomer who thinks their YT channel is booming.

  • You need click-bait titles and a soyjack face in every thumbnail. Plus tens of thousands of subscribers, and making videos very regularly.

Gear is very cheap. You can buy everything you need for a couple of thousand dollars. It's the time and energy you need to sink into the effort that's the real cost.

  • +1

The laziest, but most profitable and low effort way to make money on Youtube at the moment is react content. Just video yourself watching other people's content. React to it. Put in enough clickbait and ragebait to enrage viewers and get them commenting. Profit. Yes, it's extremely stupid, but it works.

  • I have about ~2k subs and videos with ~30k views. At this scale it works as a lead generation and authority building method for the business and is profitable from this perspective. We are still a way of audience size and view time to monetise… which isn't the intent, however interesting nonetheless.

Unless you have a business, I would say only do it for the love of it and nothing more. Exceptionally hard to hit big numbers. Bonus if you make bank.
