Thermostatic Shower Mixer - Experiences or Recommendations?

I'm looking at fitting a thermostatic mixer in the shower; these devices regulate the water temperature to an adjustable specified temperature.

Some models are fitted into a recess - which feels like a bad idea in case of leakage, failure or replacement - so I'm looking at the 'external' type which mount onto standard shower outlets.

Bunnings have the Therm-oz for $515 with a 5-year warranty but with only one review and it's Special Order.

Amazon want $372 for the same item with just one (1-star) rating without review.
https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08G1ZTGP1
but also has options like the Grohe for $199 with 4.7 stars from 7804 ratings (>80% 5-star) and similar 5-year warranty.
https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00RTG1HSC
The Grohe seems like a good choice.

Does anyone have any experience with these products;
have you installed or used one?
any observations\warnings\endorsements?
any recommendations on brand?

Thanks in anticipation.

I read this as Thermomix in the shower, which I actually think it would be convenient to make a yoghurt or roast duck on demand while maintaining my personal hygiene.

  • Damn, I wish I'd seen this before we built.
I used to travel on business in Europe (admittedly over 25 years ago!), and the shower taps in the fancier hotels were thermostatic and worked really well. I've always wanted one at home and have never had an opportunity to fit one. And when we built a retirement home recently, I missed the chance of putting one in.
Go for it. You won't regret it (but I did!).

    I have installed 4 X these ones https://amzn.asia/d/0h5q90C

They are pretty cool to use, can also get them with just the 2 options. Not cheap though.

And pretty warm too I hope?

      • It's alright, origi ally set them with thermostat to the 38 as displayed. Was at my parents house, 38 wasn't hot enough I thought so adjusted at the time.

I rate Grohe stuff, have sourced from Amazon before. Plumbers prefer not to install products that aren't WELS rated, something to be wary of unless you're going DIY.

  • I have installed a couple of non-thermostatic Quoss units which work well. They are WELS rated and also have a thermostatic unit available. Not cheap, but the reviews of the alternatives available on Amazon left me unimpressed. Quoss are based in NSW but I think the actual units are made in South Korea.

  • This Grohe unit seems like what you are after: https://amzn.asia/d/9OD8clO

  • Before you purchase any of these thermostatic mixer, find out how much is the replacement mixer cartridge. Have a backup plan whenever they breakdown. The cold and hot inlet distance of different brands may not be the same.
