The next chapter: Moving from Skype to Microsoft Teams (Microsoft 365 Blog post, February 28 2025)

The Next Chapter: From Skype to Teams video

What’s next for Skype users

During this transition period, users have a choice:

  1. Move to Microsoft Teams for free. Over the coming days, we will roll out the ability for Skype users to sign into Teams (free) on any supported device using their Skype credentials—starting today with those who are part of both the Teams and Skype Insider programs. By logging in to Teams with a Skype account, chats and contacts will automatically appear in the app so you can quickly pick up where you left off.

During the transition period, Teams users can call and chat with Skype users and Skype users can do the same with Teams users. This helps ensure you can stay connected with everyone, regardless of the platform you’re using during this transition.

  1. Export your Skype data. If you prefer not to migrate to Teams, you can instead export your data including chats, contacts, and call history.

Skype will remain available until May 5, 2025, giving users time to explore Teams and decide on the option that works best for them.

How to get started with Teams for free

Moving to Teams is simple and doesn’t prevent you from also continuing to use Skype during the transition period.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Download Teams on your device from the official Microsoft Teams website.
  2. Log in with your Skype credentials.
  3. Start using Teams with all your Skype chats and contacts ready to go.

To assist in this transition, we’ve prepared a step-by-step guide to help get started with Teams and make the most of its features.

Changes to Skype paid offerings

Moving forward, we will no longer offer paid Skype features to new customers, including Skype Credit and subscriptions that allow you to make and receive international and domestic calls. Current Skype subscription users can continue to use their Skype Credits and subscriptions until the end of their next renewal period. Skype Credit users can also continue to use their remaining Skype Credit. After May 5, 2025, the Skype Dial Pad will be available to remaining paid users from the Skype web portal and within Teams.

  • TIL that people still use Skype.

      Great tool for scammers.
While this bloke with a thick Indian accent was telling me about a large transaction on my Amazon account, I hear the Skype dial tone in the background.
Next I comment about this, and the call disconnects. Damn! I didn't make it to the part where I would have to download a VPN app on my phone.

Ms will honour credits, does that mean they will refund the balance on paid subscription if they expire after May 2015
    E.g Dec 2025?

    • What are the credits good for when you can use so many other video and voice chat platforms for free?

      • True, yeah that confuses me. Do they mean they'll refund the e pro rate $ value back to the cards?
My subscription expires in Dec 2025

I am supposed to have 24/7 customer service (via chat at least) those cunning cu**s have buried them contact options in so many layers it bloody hard to even locate.

      • For calling landlines.

  • Has anyone had experience porting a number out of Skype?

    • interest to know

I wish they would shut MS Teams down as well.

    • +4

They did, now there's the "new" Teams that enshittified your contact list.

First they came for msn messenger….

    Then they came for Skype…

Skype is really useful to make cheap local number wifi calls (and show my actual mobile number) when you are travelling abroad as many international travel sim plans only include data. It has saved me many times in emergency situations.

    • +1

Yes that's what I have been using Skype for — calling international or local numbers while travelling overseas. Still got some Skype Credit — do they get migrated to Teams, and do Teams have international calls?

      • Yup exactly. At this point I do still have some credit left (i paid for a large amount before they went on a subscription only service) so hopefully in the next few days, it will be clearer on what is available and what is not. I think maybe people are in the same situation as us.

      • I want to know what happens to the credit.

    • +1

Yep I'm in Japan right now with a data only sim, and have been using Skype a lot to make restaurant bookings. So, does Teams have that ability? If not, what other app can I use that gives me the same functionality of skype to make calls?

      • +3

I use Viber to call international numbers ever since Skype made calling landline numbers a monthly subscription, instead of prepaid credits. It might work for you.

    I pay for a Skype telephone number. (02) —.
It is forwarded by Skype to my mobile telephone number.

I am looking for suggestions on how to replicate this elsewhere.
Who should I port my telephone number to?

    • did you find a solution or alternative? I'm stuck like this too.

      • @bargainr
        I have no solution unfortunately.

I think we are going to have to find another VoIP provider offering call forwarding.
If anyone has a good solution, please let us know!

    • Many VOIP providers, e.g. Crazytel

  • Godspeed

  • It's really a shame, not sure what Microsoft expected when sitting on their f—king ass for the last 14 years since they bought it.

  • For the last 10+ years, I was on a paid subscription allowing unlimited international calls to any landline/mobile (to most countries). I will now need to find a similar service, as at times, I reach out to people who are not reachable through WhatsApp etc but through a conventional (as I hear the sarcasm from few of you) mobile number..

  • The free 60 min for M365 is also ending.
