For this money you can get a brother colour laser printer.

    • +4

And brother aftermarket toners for life

      • Which ones work best?

        • +8

depends if you want to ever print photos or not.

          • +4

@jv: Funny… I threw out a Brother 9330cdw mfc and replaced it with his. Zero regrets. The brother was dropping wifi connections all the time and the print quality was getting awful.

      • +2

Didn't they push an ota update that removed the ability to use 3rd party toners?

        • What!

        • -2

          Just don't update!?

    • +8

Is there an army of Brother Laser shills ready to pounce on every inkjet printer post? I knew when I clicked on this deal the first comment would be some muppet talking up a Brother laser printer!

Some people don't want to expose themselves to the ultrafine particle emissions of laser printers in their own homes. Or they might want better photo quality of an inkjet.

    • Brother printers are rubbish.

I run 3 epson ecotanks in my busy office and they've been going strong for 2.5 years.

Not sure why brothers get recommended on ozbargain when they're hilariously expensive to run. You end up binning the whole unit every year if you have a busy office.

      • Are you running the standard consumer models? I can't imagine using these in an office- they are crazy slow compared to laser.

I've had two Ecotanks and like them, but they are not fast enough for an office. (I'm printing from one as I type this)

        • +1

Running 2x ET-5800 (sales and office) and 1x ET-210 for the artroom proofs.

The 5800 have both done like 15,000-20,000 prints last i checked.

Going strong. 5800 is fast enough.

Brother had abit more speed but honestly don't notice it. The consumable up keep is not worth it.

They're used to print accounting, job tickets and images.

The epson software is more streamlined and less bloated than brother and the 5800 has a scanner and two trays and does double sided printing.

          We mostly print single sided.

I've been using this printer for a couple of years now… it's very good.

    • Theyre amazing and cheap

  • I got one last year when it was on sale with extra ink.
We don't print a lot - on our last printer we would go through a black catridge every six months or so. Still haven't even topped up the printer again yet from the bottles that came with it, so ink seems to last a fair while.
    Print quality is excellent.
My only gripe was the first time setup procedure was not particularly user friendly

    • Because you don't print much, do you find that you have to clean the print nozzle?

      • I have done twice using the printers built-in thing. I haven't had to manually clean it (which I have read is a thing) so I must print just often enough that it never completely clogs (maybe?)

      • +7

I have a different model. After having to throw away so many inkjet printers over the years because the ink in the head dried and clogged it, I simply run an all-colours test print on the 1st of every month, whether I've done any printing that month or not. Because even if I have I may not have used all colours and all ink nozzles. I don't want to find out the hard/expensive way how long it takes for the ink to dry in the head. The ink is so cheap it costs effectively nothing to do, unlike some other inkjet printers.

        • sounds like a solid idea to me

      • I print alot on the epsons and find you do the nozzle clean maybe once or twice a year which is more than acceptible.

Just install the full drivers to gain access to the maintenance tab

  • This or refillable Canon? Choice seem to rate the Canons quite highly

    • +3

I vote for Epson, they have better CIS. I got this one last month because my previous EcoTank ET-2500 was down after 6 years.

      • +1

My previous one was an ET-2750 and it's still going strong…

Dontated it to family members who got tired of spending $100 on ink cartrdiges every few months, now they haven't needed to top up the ink after almost 2 years.

    • +5

For inkjet ink tank types - Epson is almost always the way to go.

  • One thing to note: input tray (scanning) is not ADF.

    • It said “35-page automatic document feeder” in the specifications.

Do you mean it isn’t double sided ADF scanning? (probably it has a setting to manually scan double-sided documents?)

      • +3

        It's single-sided ADF scanning

        • Thanks for sharing your experience with this printer.

If I want to scan a double-sided document, does it have a setting to automatically merge the pages correctly, or do I have to manually merge each page after scanning?

It does have automatic double-sided printing, right?

This is EcoTank Pro. I purchased it in Jan for $475. If I go back to 2019, I spent $420 and got an ET-2500.
I'm happy with EcoTank, the printing quality is good. I was using ET-2500 to print the photo for the passport, and compared with Kmart photo services, I feel it's better than Kmart.
It's good for home and home office. The ink is cheaper than others.

In Jan Epson gave me $40 credits after registration. I bought 2 waste ink pad replacement packages and 1 pack of photo paper.

  • I own this bad boy. Does everything and have yet to refill 2 years later.

  • Ink tank is cheaper to refill now but does this inkjet printer still has the problem of the print heads clotting up with dried ink?

    • I bought an eco tank as the kids were printing hundreds of pages a month. Then we went overseas for 3 months, came back and the things started having issues. So unless you are going to use it regularly, all the time, it is a waste of money.

      • If you leave it turned on, every once in a while the printer makes some noise as it does a little routine- presumably to include purging a bit of ink out to keep the nozzles clear.

    • +2

Super easy to set them up to auto print every so often with cloud service. Or literally click print once a month on a CMYK test page and you’re golden.

  • I have the 5800 version of this as my daily driver and it's excellent.

Print quality is great and the ink lasts ages.

  • Does this have any DRMs or subscriptions?

  • +3

    Spec's: https://www.epson.com.au/products/ecotank/ET-5150_Specs.asp
    Note:

Duplex scan not supported, but the printer will auto 2-side copy once the user flips the scan page manually

  • I purchased this last year and have been disappointed with the print quality. I find the colours are dull and blacks are so light they look grayish.

    • what ink brand are you using?

    • that's not been my experience. I'd suggest you might have a problem that needs addressing

  • I bought this last year from TGG for $463 and it’s been great. I haven’t had any issues with colour print quality & blacks are black.

I paid similar money for my last printer which was a Brother colour laser printer and that thing died within 4yrs and I wasn’t exactly thrilled about that.

  • Nice! Is there a cheaper version of this? Need to replace my 12+ year old Brother laser BW printer.

Must have feature - Wifi printing via iPad and laptop for kids school homework.

    • +1

I think the Epson EcoTank ET-1810 is the cheapest model - $200 at OW. Pretty much every consumer printer has Wifi these days. As others have said - make sure you print full colour (even a test page) at least once a month or the heads can clog up (a problem even commercial inkjets have).

      • Perfect, thank you! I'll 1810 out and noted about the colour test page print monthly! My current printer doesn't have wifi and it is a pain to connect and print. Wifi would be a blessing!

  • +1

I currently own the EcoTank 8550, and in the past three years, I've experienced nozzle blockages only twice, while the initial included waste tank is just 40% full. I believe the redesigned ink collection system, along with the advancements in dye and pigment formulations, has significantly enhanced the printer's performance.

The earlier model 7750 was horrible in comparison - checking print nozzles weekly before printing, black jelly like blobs of ink falling from the print head, ink sitting and pooling in the head capping mechanism (like the pigment ink was not flushing properly)… Anyways, that had a head failure after 2 years and got it replaced with the current one so I would expect this 5150 to also be much better than previous-generation offerings if my experience is anything to go by.

As others have mentioned, when you own an inkjet printer, you do need to print regularly to avoid the nozzles blocking. Don't print often? get a laser. But need photos printed? then print at kmart.

  • Does anyone use this to print photos and can advise if this is any good for that? Comments above for other Epson printers range from using for passport photos to go to K-Mart so not sure about this printer.

    • I tried it but I found the hair part kinda overly glossy and I ended up printing on a selphy that I had previously.

Price showing as $542 now. Is the deal over?
