My friend works at a Toyota dealership and he sees Toyotas getting towed in every day. It's what happens when a car breaks down.
I get your point though. I drove a petrol MG hire car and would never buy one. These definitely seem better and far less to break….hopefully

        • +1

MG sell far more ICE than EV.

        • maybe they're being delivered

        • +4

New cars are also towed in to avoid putting KMs on the car, in case you haven't realised

        • Imagine if they see Mercs towed into an MG dealership all day every day.

From what I've read regarding NMC (this) vs LFP batteries… NMC lifespan is significantly less, more than half the charge cycles (I see 1500 is often quoted). It should easily last the life of the car though. But that doesn't mean degradation won't be a problem, I heard 5-7% initially, then approx. 1% per year. This is compounded by the fact NMC should only be charged to 80%. In 5 years or so you could be looking at a battery that can only do 70% or less. NMC is also more prone to fire. LFP has none of these problems, it's a heavier battery though.

      • easily last the life of the car

clearly the battery longevity defines the life of the car Lol

      • +9

1500 cycles at 400km per cycle( I’ve taken 10% off for less ideal conditions) and you get 600,000km.

That seems like a lot of driving for most cars, most cars will die before 600k is notched up

        • Most ICE cars now days would be lucky to get to 250,000kms, transmissions and emission control issues seem common!

      • There is also newer research that shows degradation in lab is actually more than degradation in real-life use. Most of the modern batteries are now rating to 1 million kms.

As time passes it'll become clearer that the battery is no longer the most degrading part in cars. I'd say it's going to be computers or plastics before that.

With current range models in the 400-500+ kms, after 10 yrs would it be 350-450 instead and is that a factor?

        • Its interesting that MG's warranty doesn't define an acceptable degradation rate under the warranty terms…

    • +13

I am in China right now and talked to few Didi drivers who have driven over 200,000km in 2 years with their vehicles. If they haven’t changed the battery they can get approx 400km during summer (+30c+) and 300km in winter (~+5c to +15c) with the old battery.

The cars in general were in very good condition after being driven as rideshare and kind of surprised me having read so much negative news/comments about what shit boxes they are. Maybe it’s just fear mongering?-)

      • Do you happen to know how much it costs over there to change the battery?

        • I didn’t ask but I might ballpark it half of what it costs in Australia.

      • Was this mostly MGs or a variety of makes?

        • +1

I’m in Guangzhou and to be honest I don’t recall seeing any MGs, I need to pay attention today when I go out :D

The brands mostly being used as rideshare vehicles here are Aion and Guangqi. I also saw couple small EV Toyotas but they were really basic inside compared to the Chinese brands.

  • +1

is this old stock as I cannot see a ZS EV since 2023

oh I see MY23… should there be a concern that these haven't been able to sell since 2023?

    • now with $14,791 discount is better value than 2023

      • +1

Sure but sitting there for 2-3 years already and unable to be sold

        • Do you think the same when they sell petrol Corolla's as a run out deal?

          • @serpserpserp: Toyota at most stock are 1 year old for new car runouts… I would know because I source them for people but that hasn't been happening for couple of years now

But 2-3 year old car sold as new is another story

440km? How am I supposed to get my SUV to the top of a mountain range on that? The ads told me I could drive on sandunes and beaches and end up on a mountain. With my perfect wife and perfect kids. Oh, and dog.

    • -2

      440 km in ideal conditions.

Practically speaking it will be much less and you wont want to take it to empty before you find a working charger.

So more like 300 km really.

      • +3

Nah no way its that drastic. MG4s 51 range is '350km' and I can easily get over 300km with 10% battery left

      • -2

I have to drive 450km to the city.

      • +1

I’d say it could do 350km in almost any condition, and 400km on less ideal conditions like half highway half city.

      • +2

wont want to take it to empty

        So just like a diesel.

  • +1

I like how well they managed to hide the charging port. 😏

    • Yes with that design you can rest assured that a 2km per hour parking bump wont ruin the hinge…

  • Nice deal and 2 years ago it was 20k more with a lesser warranty, boot space is a little small at 359 litres. Needs at least 100 more.

  • Towing capacity?

  • +2

I heard MG dealers are having issues with main company when dealing with warranty, good luck.

  • +1

    Really like the tiguan i drive, but man oh man that's a fantastic package 10yr / 250k / $36k …

    • Then get the Tiguan. For what you say I prefer comfort and fun drive over cheap price. Can you drive this uncomfortable car over 10 years? Money is not an issue anymore if you love the drive like your Tiguan.

    • looking to upgrade my Tiguan MY17 as well.
nothing tickles my fancy at all

Maybe another Tiguan… the new 195TSI is coming in a couple of months i trhink

      • Trading it in?

        • likely

          • @daft009: How much you expecting?

            • @freeb1e4me: No idea
Haven't looked. New model not expected till May then not sure when deliveries will actually start so have a while to go yet

    • +5

We have a 2020 Tiguan and an Atto 3 and I really don't like driving the Tiguan anymore after driving an EV.

      • Trade in/sell the Tiguan when it still has value. A sealion 7 would be a mighty upgrade

  • -8

    Worth $10k in 12 months

    • +2

Look on Carsales, 5 year old MG EV SUVs are worth 20k still

      • would you happen to know if people are buying them?

or are they like the Holden Cruze / Capitva people are just trying to get rid of them

        • +2

Just sold mine upgraded to Landcruiser, took ages to sell lost 12k in 12 months never again

          • @Wayne7497: How much did you buy it originally for?

Also what's a couple of things you didn't you like about the car?

          • +1

@Wayne7497: that's pretty standard for new car depreciation, have you sold a car before?
my toyota has lost more than 12k in 12 months

          • @Wayne7497: You wait to see the depreciation on a cruiser - that'll really make your eyes water!

      • +2

They aren’t worth that now with the price drop.

    • +1

If it's worth $10k in 2 months, I'll buy one. Please point me to the link. Thanks.

  • Is the below excerpt from MG's warranty a standard exclusion?

"slight oozing of oil or the like about packing and/or oil seals"

While its probably more relevant to ICE rather then BEV it opens the door to varying interpretations of slight?

    • +1

MG 10 year warranty doesn’t leave you with confidence

    • +2

      https://mgmotor.com.au/owners/warranty/

Some of the exclusions are standard, but there’s a whole lot of butt covering going on…

Incidental expenses as a result of defects in manufacture, including but not limited to, telephone expenses, vehicle rental charges, towing charges, loss of use of vehicle, loss or damage to personal property

Repairs or work required, that form part of the New Vehicle Preparation (PDI), or as a result of poor preparation of the vehicle prior to delivery to the customer

The re-occurrence of a fault due to the quality of work performed or a diagnosis error by a dealer, otherwise known as rework.

MG Facebook group is eye opening too

  • -5

IMHO, a proper SUV should be a diesel, you can even carry jerry cans for extra range.

    • +2

Most people aren't using SUVs for the SU part

    • +1

'Proper' SUV. That's like the no true Scotsman fallacy. I bet 99% of the kilometres traveled by SUVs in Australia are on urban sealed roads.

  • +2

Interesting to see how the base model Excite got a whopping 543+ votes while this premium Long Range (at $2k more) is currently sitting at under 100+ votes…

    • Voter fatigue

    • +2

That was before the BYD price drops and the other onslaught of Chinese EVs.
