La Luna Pet Door - Anyone Got Feedback?

Hi, does anyone have experience with La Luna Pet Doors?

I just tried a fly screen one from Bunnings and it was totally (profanity) house.

I like this one because the extension means it can work for the glass sliding door or the fly screen. It's pretty steep though coming up over $500.

Hoping there are people here who have had experience and can recommend/ not recommend?

My other option is replacing my laundry door completely. It's currently glass, so I'd have to change it to safety glass/wood to make sure it's safe.

I hear pet doors are great for getting into houses and stealing car keys.

OP might have a Pittie or a Rottie as a second layer of defence.

      • Would need a giant doggie door for those

100% - why smash a window when you can go 100% stealth

lol i did craw through a doggy door in my 20s in "a haunted abandoned house" in a US desert… not quite sure id still fit through :,)

    • You are welcome to my house anytime, Smurfs!

would you consider to cut a hole on the glass and install a flip pet door? I had Melbourne Pet Doors installed that for me and it works great.

    • They may need to replace the entire glass panel with the one cut to suit a dog door. Pretty costly exercise I think.

      • I thought the same before i got my door. Maybe check with them and see what they can offer. i installed a large size pet door on the glass and there was no replacement needed.

        • that was the initial thought.. to just do it in the glass laundry door. one company didn't say anything, but one mentioned the need to ensure its safety glass because over time the pressure of the dog going in and out might cause it to give out.

it's kindve like before i heard that it was sweet oblivion but now i can't unhear it…

Had one for at least 5 years (probably a fair bit longer - their company was called animalistic back then). No issues, locking mechanism works well, it's held up over the years and they've been good for spare parts (mainly the flap).

  • got one from bunnings it works fine. just little rust on the metal part near the flapping entry sheet/plastic
definitely not making the house more secure
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/hartman-385-x-270mm-large-pet-do…

OP search bunning for this brand above its decent

    • so i saw this. i ended up getting the Hartman fly screen version because that's all i really want to do, block out the flies (which was crap, didn't seal up properly rich means flies would still get in, and it was super unstable, no way it would hold up as the dog went in and out)

I was debating the one you have/linked but then it means it'll only work if my sliding door is always closed? Whereas i like having the door open…

Can you tell me, does it have the same feature as the La Luna, where it has the extension the means it works for both the glass and fly screen? If so, id give it a shot (couldn't tell from thy box or online)

yes we have sliding glass door and also sliding fly screen door. the hartman install on the fly screen side not on the glass door side. so you can have the fly screen open, but you CANNOT have the glass door close. ever. otherwise the dog cant access the flap at the bottom of this extension.

and its 1001% stable and no issue with our dog (well our dog is small poodle 4kgs but i can not see how 40kg dog will have issue with it. totally fine

        • ok awesome thanks, that one did look more stable.

when say it can't be closed, you mean if it's closed the dog can't get out… or, it physically can't close anymore because something is now in the way. if it's the former, thats ok, i can deal with that. it's only when really hot/ really cold, i close the door fully

I've had a Laluna one for a couple years now. It's worked alright but we have a very tall glass door which needed 5 or 6 of their extension pieces but they only support 3 or 4 of the extensions. Had to do a bit of pretend handyman work to get it to fit our door and even though it is sturdy it's definitely a weak point and would be fairly easy to break into. We have a series of locked gates/doors before this so not too worried. Just beware if you have freakishly tall doors!

Over 2 years there's been no real issues. The frame isn't showing any signs of rust or wear but the flap is a bit flimsy and discolours quickly. Will eventually change the flap out for something a bit more sturdy one day.

    • I've also been trying to rig something together to make this a smart/locking dog door so I can keep the dogs locked in when neighbours are out and about but my first attempt failed so keen to hear anyone's suggestions if they have any!

    • my ceilings are pretty low so i won't have your problem, though I'm a little jealous! high ceilings are great!

and just confirming, that yes, you can either shut the fly screen or glass door and it'll still work? and the seal is good? i.e nice close fit?

      • If it's anything like mine then your fly screen will probably be able to run in front of the pet door because it's on a separate rail to the sliding door. The glass sliding door works well though, just had to remove the locking mechanism from the wall and move it to the edge of the dog door instead.

They do provide a long rubber strip that goes between the dog door and sliding door to seal but the glue sucks so that came off quickly. I just left it off and accepted that the draft coming in from the dog door flap would be worse than the lack of a gasket.

  • I think you’ll be over the moon with your purchase.

  • My aunt had one, and it was a real security risk, so she replaced it with a perspex flap. Cost $600, but looks better, and can lock the doors properly.

  • I had one while renting for a few years and really liked it. I had to make a timber door frame so someone couldn't remove it from outside or have it damage the patio door. It also meant the patio door could be locked against the frame by putting a specially measured pole between the wall and the back of the door.

Saying that if you own the house i'd just get a normal pet door installed in the existing door which would be way more secure.
