VPN Setup or Internet Security on My GL.inet

So i bought a GL-STF1200 the other month, impulse purchase with the idea that we travel regularly and that continuly setting up ipads/phones with family members every time we travel gets a bit tiring.

Furthermore, the idea of having a secure connection rather than going through some hotel wifi was the selling point.

I've got the unit, but didn't realise that VPN need subscriptions etc yearly fee - i thought it would be an easy set and forget.

Is there a simple solution that i should look at, or create to get this secure internet option?

    stupid question - but i assume computer needs to be on 100% of the time?

      Yes. Can use Tailscale on Apple TV. Second GLInet router etc

      No, not necessarily (if talking about computer)

      you only need the router, vpn server on 100% of the times.
      vpn server can be hosted on GL inet routers simply, especially easy with like nordvpn, surfshark etc.
      But honestly no point in using external vpn services if you simply can get away with own home IP/vpn setup and just access it with another router with vpn client.

    Nord or Surfshark VPNs are often available for 2-3 years with ~95% cashback or higher, so almost set and forget.
