eBay GST from Overseas eBay Sent to Australia

It’s probably my first time in ordering something from eBay that I can remember that has gst added.

I purchased an item from a seller on eBay Europe and the price of item with shipping takes it just over $1000 so am i right this is the tax that is collected for Australia?
So when it arrives in the country there is no fees to pay?

I know we still currently can purchase up to $1000 and get no gst charge as long as it is not over that from sellers and small businesses etc.
But the likes of Amazon who add these gst costs on and ebay who do same is this me paying all taxes up front I assume it is so when it hits Australia there is no further fees right?

Obviously it’s good we can still order items from smaller businesses etc and get up to that amount gst free but it’s annoying it’s not the case for bigger retailers online.
I was just curious that what I pay now is all I be paying, to be honest I have never went over a $1000 on eBay from overseas well not since this gst thing started on eBay etc but regardless they hit you with gst no matter what the cost is ok item.
I just need to know that’s all fees I be paying?

  • thx to gerry I dont thonk the limit of 1000 exists anymore. So if it gets stopped in customs yu may have to pay customs fees on top.

  • The rules for purchases over $1000 never changed and you'd be looking at GST + customs duty which roughly ends up being 15%.

I've had orders exceeding $1000 come though without issue and others times I've had to pay.

  • It definitely does and this is a common misconception. Businesses that sell more than $75kpa into Aust must collect GST so ebay, Amazon etc. Small sellers doing under that, or claiming they do under that, don't need to collect GST and in these cases if it's under $1k it should enter without GST being collected. Where it can get muddy is the carrier used may collect it instead. most often this is the courier services like DHL, Fedex etc. If it comes via the postal service it's unlikely to be collected.

Message the seller to lower the value on the commercial invoice.

Get them to mark it as a gift.

  • I've purchased many car parts from Partsouq in Dubai and never had GST added. Same with third party sellers with Amazon USA.

  • Doesn’t eBay already add an import fee for international purchases?

  • Switch to Amazon..your keyboard will thank you 🙏

I’m not sure if this is answering my question my item purchased is less than a $1000 and shipping added is still less than a $1000 so I assume as eBay have charged gst of over $80 I have no more gst to pay?
As the item price and shipping price is less than $1000 the gst does not come into it,
it’s the cost of shipping and the cost of item or is shipping cost excluded and just cost of item?
Be it both or just the cost of item they are both under $1000 so what I’m paying eBay on gst is what I only pay?

I factored in the gst charge which just brings it over $1000 but that should not be part of it right?

My next question is you say get seller to value it less but for insurance purposes it’s free insurance up to 500 euro so as item cost me this not including shipping I insure it for 500 euro.
As I’m sure if claim ie loss or badly damaged then I’m sure maybe shipping will be covered and any gst paid possibly as well this is worse case though.
My gst was around 90 aud if i remember which I think goes on cost of item and shipping cost.

    • Goods valued over $1,000 require import declaration. Other than prohibited items, tobacco, alcohol, import duty is 5%, then GST added to the total cost.

      For example, over $1,000

      • Goods value: $1,001.00
      • Import duty: $50.05 (5% of $1,001)
      • Insurance: $100.00
      • Shipping: $100.00
      • GST: $125.11 (10% of all of the above).
      • Duty and GST payable: $175.16

      Valued $1,000 or less

      • Exempted from import declaration, therefore no duty is calculated.
      • Before July 2018, there was no GST implications.
      • From July 2018, GST is charged by overseas sellers at point of sales, except it is unclear if the overseas sellers actually pay them back to the tax office.

In your case, you don't need to factor in GST when considering import threshold. Also, as others pointed out, higher value goods pass through all the time, probably because custom doesn't have the resources to go through and validate every single item, there will be a huge backlog.

      • Sorry a little confused so when you are over $1000 then you have all these extra charges to pay when it arrives here in Australia or you simply don’t pay eBay gst when this happens?

But if your under $1000 then eBay charge you gst and that’s all there is to pay? So nothing to pay when it arrives here.

Yes I understand that sometimes things slip through due to customs being busy over $1000 but as my item is under $1000 with shipping then i will be paying gst on ebay and im covered.

Insurance is free with the shipping cost on this item so it’s basically just the cost of item and shipping and as it’s still less than $1000 for these two it’s all good, so this settles my mind.
i addied in the gst cost ebay was charging and shipping and cost of item then had me thinking it’s just over $1000 but I now know gst is not part of the total.

    • ebay has collected it, you won't have to pay anything at the border.

Getting the seller to value it less doesn't work when you're buying from legit sellers. Do you really think ebay are going to agree to give you a dodgy invoice and not charge GST?

      • Yes i thought that and why worry as its under the $1090 anyway

        • Marketplaces collect GST for orders with **item value*** to be less than A$1k - shipping is not included in the $1k calculation. If this is the case, you won't pay anything anymore
