Ethernet Speed Problems with Asus Router

G'day all.

About 3 months ago I got an Optus 5G modem and have consistently been getting speeds of 400-1000Mbps download. I have since day 1 had an Asus mesh system connected to the Optus modem and have been getting 300-600Mbps consistently which has been great. About 2 weeks ago, literally overnight the Asus started to only give me ~50mbps whilst the Optus 5G modem continued its great speed. I have no idea why things have changed and the speed of the Asus has significantly dropped. It's been like this now for about 2 weeks and I have tried what feels like everything to resort back to the good speeds on the Asus with no luck.

Things tried so far:
- Complete factory reset of the Asus system
- Complete factory reset of the Optus 5G modem
- Tried a brand new Asus mesh system (I thought possibly something was wrong with my current system)

I am at a loss as to why I cannot get the speeds that I was getting from the Asus system whilst nothing has changed with the modem speeds.

The only thing I can now think of is the Optus or Asus has automatically updated its firmware and potentially that has changed something..

Any ideas?

Cheers

  • How is the modem connected to the Asus system? The drop in speed is consistent with that connection falling back for some reason from gigabit to 100 Mb/s.

    • Hardwired via Ethernet cable

      • Tried a new cable and different ports?

      • Cat 5, 5e or 6 cable?

      • Usually ethernet ports have coloured lights on them to tell you what speed they are operating at.

      • Each NIC should list their connection speed, are the modem router and PC all showing GbE?
