Webcam Suggestions for Low Light Environment

Hi OzB
I'm seeking some guidance or recommendations on a webcam for low light areas (work use) preferably with an in built light to reduce cables. The primary use would be for Teams meetings.
If there's not a specific camera with light, is there a specific lens or specs I should look out for?

Thanks!

From worst to best (in terms of low light performance):

Razer Kiyo has built-in ring light but the microphone sucks.

Brio 4K is nice and quite sensitive in low light.

Old Android or Iphones can be used as a webcam and usually works well in low light even when using front camera and its done through software on both phone and/or desktop (IVCam) but mic support is flakey and phone may get hot.

Otherwise if you have a DSLR and a good prime lens you can have really really good lens in lowlight condition.

Ive tried all the above except the Kiyo (cause mic sucks according to YouTube reviews) and ended up getting Brio 4K secondhand for $120.

I also eventually added a desktop microphone and been using this (it was $99 at the time) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/16137957/redir

    • Seconding the use of a phone, since that's something already on hand, and it would just be a matter of getting it onto a mount of some sort. The back camera of most phones has decent low light capabilities these days.

      • not even back camera, even the front camera is better than most webcams except when you compare with something above $300 etc

        • True, I focussed on the rear cam though because generally the sensor and capability is much better there, and you don't use the phone screen to check your framing anyway.

@margiela: Oh yeah of course… I was just pointing out how webcams are rip off and they still sell $150-$200 for webcams with similar tech as more than 10 years ago.

    • Thanks for your suggestions! Ill look into Razer and Briyo.
In built microphone is not essential as i utilize a BT headset.

I'm curious why Teams meeting would be conducted in low light environment…
Do actively deployed SAS soldiers have to call in for nightly meetings whilst in the field?

There is a dilemma depending on your WFH setup… Sometimes its too bright but then you pull the blind down its dark and some shitty laptop webcams make you look terrible.

For me, i just do a lot of conference calls with colleagues in different timezones hence it can get dark.

Blinds down + ceiling light or lamp on?

dunno some webcam is weird even when you turn on ceiling lights, some light leakages around the blinds cause the contrast to be off…

I used to have that issue when i was living in an apartment as the light was much harsher but now the lights from my backyard is just good throughout the day.

Just put up a ring light and try not to think too hard about what it looks like.

yup, so really, any cheap webcams and cheap ring lights from aliexpress will do wonders…

i was just making recommendation based on OP's request for built in lights.

          • @meong: And very much appreciated! I may look into a rechargeable ring light of some sort.

            • @teddies: Btw, i wear glasses, ring lights can cause noticeable reflections on my lenses. A screenbar can also help light up your desk space.

Its just the design of my house where a workstation can be setup. Tucked away in a corner with its nearest window obstructed by a pergola.

  • More room lighting
better ceiling light, lamp behind monitor….

    • Yes. I will look into a rechargeable ring light to place behind the monitor as the natural and ceiling light sources are difficult to adjust.

  • light a candle

Could have just googled it: https://social-rise.com/blog/best-camera-for-onlyfans

Rather than a round about way of asking :P

    • Damn all of my suggestions are in that article… Now no one will believe me that i have "colleagues" (or clients?) from different timezones…

In LinkedIn they call this a "side hustle culture" you know…

      • Hehe, was going to point that out, but didn't want it to look like an accusation :P
