Transferring HSBC USD to PayPal USD

Ive got a HSVC everyday global account with USD in it and and another HSBC everyday global account with AUD
Both have the same account number on the HSBC dashboard……

Anyway, I'm trying to transfer USD to my paypal in USD (Paypal has USD as primary) in order to not lose out on currency conversion
Aim here is to buy something online in USD
I tried paying the vendor directly but it didnt work as I dont have a credit card, so I'm resorting to paying via paypal
Accounts are now linked, but when trying to transfer money in paypal its asking for the amount in AUD?
I've also got a revolut card - but thats also not a credit card, so I suspect I'll have the same issue?

TLDR Am I missing something? Is there a way to pay directly from HSBC in USD to paypal in USD?

  • Would choosing USD as payment currency "force" the HSBC debit card to use up your USD first?

  • +7

When I buy on Aliexpress (as an example) i'd be using my HSBC card (linked to Paypal) and paying in US dollars, charged directly to my card. Just before the payment confirmation, you can disable the automatic Paypal currency conversion and select USD as the currency you want to be charged with. You'll be notified that your bank will be the one doing the conversion, just click to continue.

The payment will be made with your USD balance

I would skip the step of transferring money to Paypal altogether, it's completely unnecessary.

    • yep thats exactly what I did in the end (linked the card to paypal).
doesnt make sense though as I actually entered the card details again (I selected pay their paypal account from xxx card)
I doubt I entered the card details incorrectly 5 times but there is always that possibility I guess

hopefully it did a straight USD to USD conversion with no fees - will wait and see :)
