Decent tortilla chips that don't cost an arm and a leg?

Alright guys, I'm coming at you with the big questions here… tortilla chips are clearly amazing and are a guilty pleasure I can't shake. Since about 2022 the pricing of them is just dumb though. Used to buy a 850g packet of the best quality organic mission ones at Costco for $7.99, they are now $13.89.

I eat too many of these things, and don't really want to reign in the habit. Does anyone have a good bang for buck way to get tortilla chips?
Colesworth, Aldi, Asian shop, all too dear. Best I can find these days is $13 per kilo,

Need tortilla chip connect so that I can continue having nachos for breakfast lunch and tea without taking out a second mortgage.

i think all you'll find cheaper than that is either
    a) aldi corn chips (they're not bad!) sprinters brand. they're like $2.50/200gm.
    b) local grocer / unbranded corn chips (usually circle shaped, no clue who makes them, harris farm sells them as "Sonora" brand). the Harris Farm one I mentioned is like $6.50/500gm on sale, I've seen them as low as $6 off sale at my local greengrocer. they're all pretty similar.

    • Maybe I'm a tortilla chip snob but I found the Aldi ones a bit meh

I'll keep checking out the locals, and do some recon for Sonora, cheers. Don't Harris farms near me unfortunately but the local shops/unbranded I've done the conversion on have all come but more expensive than Amazon per kg

Edit: I should note, waiting for sales isn't an option, I buy 3 500g bags when on sale "should last me ages", then a week later on on the hunt lol

Buy some masa harina and a tortilla press

    • Interesting suggestion, hadn't considered that. Did some research into the cost per batch (after acquiring the press) :

Total Time Required for 500g Batch
      Baking Method: ~1 hour.

Cost to Make 500g of Tortilla Chips
      $2.50-$5.50 (baked), $5-$9 (fried).

40-80% the cost of buying the ready made product, but a decent time sink.
Hmm. Will sit on that thought for a bit, see if it's something I'm prepared to do. The time sink seems like a lot, but maybe there's a lot of waiting involved. Might watch some YT videos lol.

I don’t do it with corn chips but I make my own granola. It’s a time vs quality vs cost thing.

For the to make my own granola it’s a bit cheaper and obviously involves a lot more time. The clincher for me is the quality of what I make is much better than what I can buy (regardless of price point) so I just make my own and am much happier for it

Obviously to do that you’ll need to buy a tortilla press

        • Fair point re quality. I'm actually content with off the shelf tortilla chips products tbh, just the price is my only issue. Feel like my creation could go either way, superior or inferior.

If you cbfed, care to share what products you use for your own Granola? You just mix it together right, or do you also toast things?
Granola, yoghurt and banana is one of my morning go-to brekkies. Gippsland yoghurt, and Carmen's Granola - Carmen's leaves plenty of room for improvement!

          • @JakeyJooJoo: I have a big overbuilt wooden tortilla press. It would take multiple hours of labour intensive work to make a bag of chips this way, there's NFW you're doing it more than once. I don't even make my own tortillas half the time when I'm just making tacos and I have a full size griddle to pump them out on.

You could buy some quality premade tortillas and fry your own but the cost/kg but they're about $18/kg.

PS I quite like Market Grocer’s ones

Cheers, timely newspaper article! Think I'll have to give the Aldi ones another look in after rereading that.

The product pricing has gone up over 40% in 3 years without having changed, far more than inflation. Clearly just boosting corporate profits. As a consumer, on a bargain site, you should understand we're getting gouged. How dare I want to ask around the community here to minimise my gouging…

      • +2

Agree. Gotta minimise the gouging and maximise the gorging.

        • That's the spirit lol
