Blue Yeti Pro - Soldering Question

I might likely get my dad to do this unless someone in Sydney is able to, but I’ve managed to take apart my blue yeti pro as it keeps disconnecting from my pc, not getting recognised or making me sound like I’m muffled. I Believe it’s the port, I’ve taken apart the blue yeti pro and opened the housing and found that the contacts don’t appear to have solder on them. (Hopefully that’s the right term, again I’ve never soldered and don’t have a great understanding of how electronics work)

Image A contains a YouTube video of a guys blue yeti (not pro) after re-soldering, the connectors are covered with solder

Image B is mine, a blue yeti pro (though a slight different in board, basically the same internals), and looks to have no silver on the connectors, is this potentially why it’s disconnecting? I will replace the port anyway if I have to de-solder and solder regardless but thought I’d ask.

If you have any tips, advice or questions please comment that as I would really love some help on this.

  • are you referrring to the USB port? looks like the solder has broken off a pin. you need to go over all those pins with a soldering iron. leave the port as is unless it is broken. you might cause damage trying to desolder it

    • My image is image B : https://i.imgur.com/EkfPWEw.jpeg is this clear enough? I don't see a broken off pin but you could be right (can you circle it so I can show my dad)

      And understood for the rest.

EDIT: I read that wrong, you said the solder broke off the pin not the pin was broken, apologies.

      • it's hard to tell from your photo, so it is quite possible i am wrong, but when you zoom in on the 5 USB connector pins, the texture on the bottom right one looks a little odd.

you could try gently wiggling the USB port (possibly with a USB cable inserted) to see if any of the pins move around in the solder.

if reflowing the solder doesn't help then it might be the case the USB port is jiggered or has a broken pin, and might need replacing

  • Image B has has been re-soldered as there is flux on the PCB around the USB through hole pins.

Re-solder your USB port pins first and make sure that the person checks that the soldering is good. Check the USB socket continuity via a sacrificial USB cable before replacing the USB socket. If your Dad is not good at soldering then take it to a TV or Audio repair place and get them to replace the connector. Nothing worse that lifting tracks if you do not have the skills.

    • Re-soldered? Interesting since it was considered brand new from Blue themselves…. I don't know how much a TV or Audio repair place would charge but the microphone itself is worth $200 AUD, so if it costs $80+ AUD to fix, I may as well buy another microphone I think as these seem to be prone to break (although it has been 6 years).

Re-soldering the USB Ports would just be adding solder ontop of the pins in image B right? The, I believe ground pins (the two at the end that are seperated by a bit) look to still be fine soldered, but has the soldering just come off the 5 pins and just needs solder ontop of them again..?

edit: Sorry if my replies sound ignorant

      • Image B solder joints should be re-soldered by someone who knows what they are doing.

  • Ignore I looked at the pic wrongly. /blush

    Pre-clean properly. Incorrect heat used.

  • First, I thought soldering a Yeti? It could not be a Blue Yeti. I was right!
