85 pieces in dural lol and plenty everywhere… 75 pieces in taree

i'm putting it out there that the total demand for optical cables in australia wont exceed the stock Bunnings had right there

    toslink is a legacy format

    • -1

dural probably has the highest amount of people with insane theatre rooms

      • +4

yeah but optical doesnt pass any surround formats made in the last decade

        • -1

Sound quality difference is hardly noticeable without lab tools.

@Ozzster: Very true… but when you can run a HDMI cable (which you’d probably need anyway for visual), for ARC/eARC, you can see why no one uses toslink cable.

            • @kfp187: My Edifier s2000mk3 speakers connected through TOSLINK are still cheaper and sound better than any sub $1000 subwoofers with the latest audio format.

              • @meong: Yeah for that use it’s perfect. But I suppose my comment was more for movie content.
Never really been impressed with Atmos music content I’ve heard on my soundbar. And toslink would be just as sufficent for music content.

If you have a use for toslink I’m all for it :) But can also see why it’s not used as often.

                • @kfp187: I probably have lower standards for movie sounds compared to you even though i do buy headphone amplifiers etc for music.

Currently I have Samsung TV connected to Edifier S2000MKIII for movie and PS5.

I also have LG C4 as my monitor connected to Edifier 1700 for music and gaming.

Both are using TOSLINK and i'm happy with the sound and depth even from the 3D perspective.

I can see that when you start incorporating more than 2.1 channels then maybe you do need to have the latest 3D sound processing but for 2.0 or 2.1 setup, you won't lose much via TOSLINK and you will have more issues in the quality of the speakers themselves hence why i said "better than any sub $1000 subwoofers (meant to say soundbars)"

cause above $1000 you do want to invest in something more proper. Even on my Edifier R1700, connecting the PC through a Chord Mojo improves the sound too but then that means the connection becomes digital-analog-digital because the Edifier has DSP.

By using TOSLINK to all of the Edifier setups, I get to allow the connection to stay digital-digital.

Sure, soundbar users will use eARC etc, but I find soundbards in general are overpriced compared to a proper audio setup.

                  • @meong: I read up to you having the LG C4? Do you like it? I have the B9 which knock on wood hasn’t skipped a beat for me and is still getting updates… but thinking of getting a 65” in the future and thinking this.

The bonus with arc/eARC is the ability to control it with the tv remote…

                    But horses for courses.

But overall I think we are agreeing on the same point. Great price for toslink cable and great for use cases that require it.

@kfp187: ARC and eARC control are not necessarily a must especially since newer TVs can allow the remote to act as universal remote. Both the LG C4 and Samsung Frame 2024 can control my Edifier speakers.

In regards to LG C4, i upgraded from the AW38 (obtained from the Muzeeb deal). It was my first OLED screen ever so i can only say good things about it!

I find that having 42" screen can be too big for FPS so i would switch to 21:9 1600p ratio (which is similar to the AW res) at times.

@kfp187: This is a bit different kind of use. HDMI is for video, where sound comes by the way. I would output it from PC's video card. Toslink is intended for sound only, output from mobo or soundcard and will work with old but great receives available for throwaway prices. The end speaker sound system would be the same in all cases. I see no use in ARC/eARC if you have high quality sound system anyway.

              • @Ozzster: Yep. But unfortunately I feel users of toslink is a minority.

Most people go the tv/soundbar route and probably do music and movies through that via ARC/eARC which can do the same output as Toslink.

Would I prefer my parents/grandparents setup from the 70’s. Absolutely.
But at the same time, toslink can pass through hi res audio whereas their RCA audio cables don’t.

                • @kfp187: Agree on the TOSLINK being a minority.

Most people would just get a sound bar for the simplicity and they will just use ARC.

My audiophile friends also use mostly USB audio.

  • Example use case: Sony TVs hooked up to a stereo (not surround) system. Many - all? - models don't include a basic stereo out, except as an optical connection. Run it to a small DAC and you can then plug in your stereo-only amp.

  • Thanks OP Bought one Btw what does it connect to?

    • +1

the most popular use for optical is to pass sound from a tv to a soundbar

however most modern tvs have arc/e-arc which allows sound to pass down thru the hdmi as well as picture

      thats it

if you're more into sound then you can pass sound from a PC to an external dac or speaker setup if your pc has optical out

      • Thanks mate Forgot /s for satire ;)
