Digital Good Food Gift Cards No Longer Works at Specific Restaurants Since The Start of 2025

For those who don't know, Good Food gift cards only works with MCC 5812 and MCC 5813, but not MCC 5814.

There are a few restaurants that Good Food gift cards used to work but have been declining my payment since new year.

I checked the transaction record. The terminal category of the transactions changed from 5812 in Dec to 5814 in Jan. But I don't see any change in the physical EFTPOS devices that the merchants use.

So it might be a system upgrade of the EFTPOS devices or Good Food gift cards can change the category of devices as they wish and customers can't do anything about it.

  • Good Food Cards can change the category of devices as they wish and customers can't do anything about it

believable because they actively hate you

It has never worked at MCC 5814 I believe, common knowledge. It's also noted in our Gift card wiki that it's not accepted at Fast food MCC's

The restaurant you were using most likely changed it's payment processor and updated their MCC to 5814.

  • The merchant's payment processor can change the assigned MCC for a merchant at any time without notice, and this is not unheard of. For example, the Woolworths Group gift card portal previously used MCC 5411 (Grocery Stores, Supermarkets), but around October 2023, it changed to MCC 5399 (Miscellaneous General Merchandise Stores).

A payment processor does not need to change the physical EFTPOS terminal in order to change the MCC assigned to a merchant.

I have never ever heard of a card issuer changing the MCC of a merchant, and that is probably because that is not how the system works.

I wonder whether the payment processor for the restaurants you speak of accidentally assigned the wrong MCC to the restaurants in the first place (or the restaurants changed their business model), as there are differences between the definitions of MCC 5812 and MCC 5814. If you look at the Mastercard definitions:(mastercard.us)

    MCC 5812
Merchants that prepare food and drinks for immediate consumption, typically on the merchant’s premises and also provide catering services. Such merchants provide table service by a waiter or waitress, and a gratuity may be added to the bill.

    MCC 5814
Merchants that sell prepared food and beverages for immediate consumption either on the premises or packaged for carry-out. Fast food restaurants may or may not operate a drive-up window for ordering and pick-up, and may or may not provide table service by a waiter or waitress. In any case, orders are paid for at the counter or at a drive-up window. Fast food restaurants include cafes, cafeterias, grills, coffee shops, diners, pizza parlors, sandwich bars or shops, deli shops, and snack shops. If table service is provided, a gratuity may be added to the bill. Such merchants generally do not sell alcoholic beverages.

    • The change happened in multiple merchants simotenously, so it must be systematic.
