100

This is my first post, so if there is anything wrong with it please let me know…

Wireless1.com.au has a special offer for the Samsung SGH-I780 Smartphone on their website. I know it's not the newest smartphone out there but its still a very good one for a very good price.
Here are some specs from the wireless1 website:

  • Built-in GPS (Software not included)
  • 3 way data input - optical mouse, touch screen, QWERTY keyboard
  • WiFi 802.11b/g
  • Windows Mobile 6 professional edition for Pocket PC
  • HSDPA up to 3.6Mbps
  • 2 megapixel camera and internal camera

It also comes with 2 batteries and a seperate battery charger as well as with bluetooth and heaps more stuff…

I think it's a very good deal. Just bought one…

Hope you like it!

  • I am very keen to read peoples opinions on this as i am wanting to buy my hubby a phone for his b'day/christmas that has GPS and a good camera as well as just being a "cool" phone. (Yeah I know that corny, but hey he's turning 40).

I did heaps of research about the phone and apparently one of the few weaknesses is the camera. Some people said the 2 MP camera is not the best out there… So maybe this phone isn't the best for you then. On the other hand, the price is very nice for this phone. I found it very hard to find a phone with similar specs. HSDPA, Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi and a reasonable battery life in this price range is pretty hard to find, I think.

  • good features and its stylish! GREAT BUY! (ps congrats on ur first post!)

  • Thanks for that Realnt :)

  • Oh just got that sickllama! (i'm a bit thick today) thanks :)

  • Doesnt say anything about bluetooth extras or free battery on the website - can you post where it says the included extras.

I did see a few reviews where the pack comes with a spare battery but it surprises me that they dont list the inclusions on the web site.

Unfortunately, the product description on the website is not very detailed. However, they only sell the genuine retail packages which include a second battery and a seperate charger. I got this information from several reviews on the net.

    Example 1: [Goodgearguide](http://www.goodgearguide.com.au/index.php/taxid;2136213112;p… "Goodgearguide")
    Example 2: [cnet.com.au](http://www.cnet.com.au/mobilephones/pdaphones/0,239036203,33… "CNet")

The full specs including Bluetooth can be found on the [Samsung Website](http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/detail/spec.do?group=mobi… "Samsung")

    I hope that helps…

  • Awesome deal, good phone for the price

  • Well. Samsung BlackJack II apparently has been picked by Consumer Reports as the best smartphone this year, and BlackJack II (i617) is in some ways similar to i780, if not inferior. So I guess this is a great buy, if you

    • Are fine w/ the 2MP camera
    • Don't mind Windows Mobile 6
    • Don't mind Samsung's proprietary audio socket

How would you compare this to, say Nokia E71?

Edit: Also note that i780 only has HSDPA on 2100Mhz (Optus & Voda metro). It means it would not work on NextG, and will not be able to use Optus & Vodafone's 3G in rural area (900Mhz).

  • Thanks Scotty and Realtnt for the info above.

Yeah from what I understand, the I780 is the successor of the Blackjack2.
To add to Scottys list of disadvantages of the phone I want to mention the resolution of the phone. The 320 x 320 pixels of the display are quite "exotic" and it needs some playing around to make some programs work. Lots of people wrote that they had to install Realvga to be able to install stuff on the phone. That might be a disadvantage for people who just want to use it instead of playing around with the phone. (I am looking forward to play around with it :) )

Also interesting is that Samsung plans a [relaunch of the phone](http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2231363/samsung-unveils-bi… "Relaunch") with a different name/brand. Apparently they are going to call their qwerty smartphones "BizBee" in the future. It will be the same phone with windows mobile 6.1.
I found that interesting because new products even just renamed once tend to be more expensive…

Like scotty, I would compare carefully to Nokia E71. It is a bit more expensive, it's around $500 I think. The biggest difference is obviously the operating system, Windows Mobile vs. Symbian S60 in the Nokia. It's of course a matter of preference which one is better. From what I've read, S60 is said to be speedier, especially in these newer phones. The software that's available to them also differs, but unless there's something you really know you're going to need, it's more a matter of preference again.

Nokia E71 does support the Optus' 900Mhz 3G frequency, but does not work on Telstra's NextG/3G.
E71 has a 3mpix camera, with autofocus and a led light, but it's not really very good camera. It also has a non-standard audio socket, being 2.5mm instead of the normal 3.5mm. Other than those two "faults" it's a beautiful mobile with a great keypad, I've been using it for a few months now and can't complain.

I just got the confirmation that the phone comes in the normal retail package. So its confirmed, it comes with a second battery and external charger. Just to let you know guys…

  • I purchased an i780. Great phone and the store was quick at shipping at to me (1 day in Sydney). I really like it and you can tether it easily with your laptop. Add an HSDPA SIM from Exetel and you can laptop surf for free for 5 dollars per month plus charges (15 dollars first gigabyte pay as you go, 25 thereafter). I am quite happy with it. I added the 20 dollar Navigation software which seems quite solid! Happy Holidays!

  • I forgot to say: The Phone works with any carrier, I used Vodafone and Exetel (=Optus) in it. I simply changed the network settings.

  • Here is my experience with wireless1.com.au:

Since they've sent the phone only in a padded bag, it arrived in a damaged box and looks like second hand! Seriously how could you dispatch a 400 Dollars phone in a padded bag? And I even pay $25 for packaging! I told them that I am not very happy with a box which looks like a second hand one. They didn't care at all they just said the post guy might have dropped it and it's not their fault. I totally disagree, I think its their responsibility to choose the right packaging! Does that make sense to you guys?

Besides that, I think the phone is very nice. The only thing bothering me is the pretty loose cover of the data port. The cover of the memory-card slot is fine but the data cable one is too loose.

Well… the phone is nice and I'll get used to the loose cover… What I can defenitly say as well is that I will never ever post (or even buy) something from wireless1.com.au on this website. The way they talked to me was just not appropriate! Consider that for your next buying decision!
