Mesh Wi-Fi System That Can Seperate 2.4GHz and 5GHz

Hi. My brain hurts trying to research all the mesh options.

I’ve been Telstra with 4 Telstra boosters in house and the boosters have not been working.

I have a 2 story house. The nbn FTTP NTD is at outer wall of garage. It’s at the opposite end of house to bedroom upstairs and downstairs. It's not transmitting a strong signal. I didn’t realise 2.4GHz only gives ~115Mbps. The 5GHz gives 250Mbps.

Because of Google devices and Roborock and eufy cameras I need to split the GHz. I was looking at the eero 6+ and then read it can’t split them.

Do I understand correctly that they connect a mesh device to the Telstra modem? And then the 3 (I'm guessing I need a 3 pack mesh system) to spread the Wi-Fi throughout the house?

There is no wired Ethernet ports. Obsolete as they put the nbn FTTP NTD opposite end of house to where the previous FTTN was.

What I’d “like” as my wish list is:

  1. Mesh system with Wi-Fi 6 or better - tri band (research indicates it’d be better for the distance and number of devices?).

  2. Can separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

  3. Can identify the devices connected.

Currently in the Telstra gen 3 modem I can see the 24 devices connected but lots are "unknown".

I’m with Origin energy and they offering me 6 months 250/25 (Superloop I believe) for just $60 a month. With More Telecom I’m paying $90 a month for 250/25.

Before Telstra had to make the Telstra TVs obsolete 100Mbps was sufficient. Not their fault as Roku apparently would no longer support Telstra.

To use the crap Fetch Mini replacement I went up to 250Mbps. Omg it’s the worst device ever. Shockingly bad. But to have the 3-4 fetch boxes linked for access to stream apps from the same account in 4 rooms (6 TVs in house) I had to increase speed.

I’d appreciate the expertise of this knowledgeable community.

I know there have been several posts re mesh systems which I’ve read. If anyone knows of a system that would fulfill my wish list - or close I’d be very grateful.

    My brain hurts too, now.

    • lol 😂 i UNDERSTAND 😃

    • Yes but you can’t have a 2.4ghz only access point which is what op is after. My Panasonic aircon used to give me headaches with combined 2.4ghz and 5ghz ssid.

I was playing around with an eero6+ and that does not allow for a separate 2.4ghz ssid

I was using Ubiquiti Amplifi HD which allowed for an iot network and that solved the problem, but they’re basically abandonware at this point

      • Thanks for answering and information.

Look for a TP Link system that supports triband (2.4, 5 and 6 GHz). It won't be cheap, like $500 or more for a 3 node mesh. TP Link allows separate SSID for 2.4 and 5Ghz if that's what you were referring to. E.g. https://www.tp-link.com/au/home-networking/deco/deco-xe75/

These mesh systems can use Ethernet (if you have it) or WiFi for the backhaul (how the mesh nodes talk to each other).

Worth keeping an eye on good guys commercial, I paid $440 for the XE75 3 pack.

Definitely great having the 6ghz backhaul, I have a couple of machines connected via ethernet to one of the nodes, it's blazingly fast.

I was also able to add $30 wifi range extender into the network for a device that was ethernet only, it has become a pretty sprawling network at this point and I love it.

      • @freefall101 with Origin rewards I’m eligible for good guys commercial!!!
THANK you so much as I bought for $445 - and selling all the big stores $699 !!
Very exciting to be able to have great wifi throughout the house. Huge savings 🙏🙏🙏

    • Thank you. 🙏

    • Thank you. I will look again at that (I did look the other night but can’t remember what it was I’d read that wasn’t on my 3 wishlist functions). I may only get first 2 of the three). Ethernet not option atm.

In the Deco app, names of the devices will be shown against which mesh node they're currently connected to. If you move around the house, the device will reconnect to the stronger signal and your app will show that too.

        • Thanks !

    • My 5GHz Deco S4 gives me more than 1Gbps.

Looks like OP is technical enough to head over to whirlpool tom get help.

Sorry I do not have the time to analyse the very tech info supplied that is 1000% better than the standard OZB mesh info.

Mesh is only as good as the upstream worst devices and the the Technicolor device is 90% of cases suck, so check it out for replacement.

Can you run CAT 5E to "move" the main MESH device so it is better situated?

    • Hi. Thanks for replying and the compliment te my informative post with specific detail for comprehension. I just noticed I spelt “separate” incorrectly! (OMG My brain was so overworked at time of posting!! )

I’m not in IT at all but my brain needs and wants to learn and UNDERSTAND how everything works (super left brain and love technology and problem solving ).

, A CAT 5E could help - appreciate that suggestion.
Yes the FETCH mini sucks so bad.
It’s the linking 3 for continuity and convenience that I got 3.

But yes -,I have a Chromecast and amazon fire stick on the other 2 tvs. Might have to do that.
      Thanks again.
