[Switch] Slay The Spire $12.90 (RRP $37.95) @ Nintendo eShop

570

Equal all-time — according to https://www.dekudeals.com/items/slay-the-spire. It seems to go on sale every few months.

Bought it recently on a mate's recommendation; you lose track of time when playing. It's addictive (and hard so far).

Metacritic score 85, Opencritic score 89. Considered one of the best deck-building games out there.

Note: Slay the Spire 2 is scheduled to be released on PC soon. So keep that in mind in terms of possible buyer's regret.

No need to wait for 2, it will probably be EA anyway, and they dont even have a release date yet.
You can spent a good 200+ hours on this while waiting

This game is flipping awesome, i have been hooked for the last week or so, every spare hour i get i try and fit another run in!

  • +7

Buyer regret on this? impossible. I only have it on all available platforms, and STILL willing to give them my money because of how good this is

    • I love roguelikes but don't like turn based gameplay, and don't have any particular attachment to card collecting stuff.

I bought this recently on Steam after being unsure for a long time, and ended up 'finishing' it once, but didn't really enjoy it tbh. It's just not the kind of gameplay I enjoy. If anybody else is on the fence with similar feelings, it might be better to skip it in their case.

For comparison I love FTL and Hades, as well as a few other so-so roguelikes like Convoy and Dungeon of the Endless, but turn based just makes me frustrated with having to take hits and there being nothing that you can do about it regardless of skill, you just have to get the right cards from RNG.

      • +1

Fair, I think the skill is knowing when you can afford to take those hits to enable something out of nothing on a future turn, when you get bad RNG. I liked STS but found Monster Train and recently Wildfrost more fun, getting to balance dmg/atk around a whole team, instead of one character.

    • I couldn't get into it. I've tried multiple times. I like roguelikes, I like deck builders. This didn't do it for me.

  • +1

I let my mate borrow my physical copy of this game… he came back to me a few weeks later and I quote "you are never getting your game back". He got sooo hooked, and the physical copy sells now for like $80+

  • +2

Great game. Still the best by far in this genre.

  • +3

How does this compare to Balatro for addictiveness?

    • +4

As the yanks would say, they both hold a place on the Mount Rushmore of awesomely addictive games.

    • +2

If Balatro is a level 10 addictive, STS would be a 9 minimum.

    • +3

I came here to say I thought slay the spire was life consuming… balatro is to be cliche, next level. I very often will think oh I’ll quickly play 1 round at 1am to ease into sleep.. then it’s 3am… and have to wake up again at 630.

An actual Time Eater…….. just like that stupid boss……… 9.5/10

    • THE WORST!!!

      • easily the most annoying boss. RIP my infinites

  • +1

This game is way too addicting, my partner keeps checking in on me and going "I thought you finished this game already!"

  • How does this run on Switch vs other platforms? I keep hearing great things about it but I have my phone, Switch and PS5, and am not sure which would be best for it?

    • Tablet all the way

      • I don't have a tablet unfortunately

      • Switch is kinda a tablet

    • +1

it plays amazing on the switch. no issues at all

      • Awesome, thanks for that!

  • FANTASTIC game and even better on Steam where you can download mods to make it multiplayer.

My friends and I have spent MANY nights creating and playing custom multiplayer games, bloody good times indeed!

    • this is my only regret of the switch, i cant play all the mods and expansions :(

  • I've only put in about 15mins via xbox game pass. It hasnt hooked me yet.

Is it the kind of game where one is hooked immediately or does it open up later? I'll give it a bit longer in hope I can experience what others have.

    Many good reviews

    • +2

It definitely gets more addictive and equally more frustrating/satisfying as you learn. The card/relic synergies, boss/character mechanics and different win combinations are what start to get you hooked.
Without giving away any spoilers, there's also more to the game than what first appears with the standard floors to progress through.

      • :)

        • yes. also the first few playthroughs are 'ok'. but it really shines on replays as you learn strats, synergies and opponents.
think of something similar to Hades, but obviously slower paced than it, but also more complex and far more things you can mess with.
it is something i picked up a few times, and then really got into it, then started watching the crazy shit on YT to watch the combos they make and then my addiction blew up

    • +2

15 minutes is not enough time to get a grasp of any game. If you want to see if it's for you or not, play one whole run and see if you want to go again.

      • :)

    • +2

If you can get to 2-3 hours you will be hooked guaranteed

      • Will do :)

  • Anyone played steamworld quest + this? Would I enjoy all the same

    • Quite different games but scratch a similar itch. You'll like it

  • Oh god no, please…I already play this waaaaay too much on PC. Making it portable would be the end of me

    • +2

I won't mention how you can get it on your phone too then…

  • I don't have a Switch but I'd like to get this on my Android phone… lots of reviews saying that their progress was wiped on Android devices, though.

    • +2

No issues with my progress on Android via play pass, 127 hours and counting… cannot get enough of this game.

  • GOAT

  • Currently playing this on iphone with my free trial of Apple Arcade. When it expires and I decide to just buy STS through the app store (I don't play any other games on Apple Arcade), will my progress/save be transferred over?

FYI just in case I wasn't clear previously - it is addictive…

Thank god i checked the gameplay on youtube. For anyone wondering, its a card game. Not for everyone - definitely, not for me.

    • +3

I'm not sure what kind of experience "card game" evokes in your mind, but to me it's something that this game is not. Sure, obviously the whole thing is based around "cards" but that's just the way the effects are displayed. It could be functionally identical with treating the modifications the cards provide as just straight perks. Hence the term 'roguelite' being the correct genre.

  • even better on pc with mods :)

  • Fantastic game!

  • Buyer beware, once you start playing, you won't be able to stop.
