Specrite Multi Use Panel 1800×405×18mm (Brown, Golden Teak, Hevea) - $29 (Was $59) C&C @ Bunnings (Excl WA)

640

Credits to price hipster.

Great little panels. I used two of the 60cm deep ones (these are 40) to make some two new desks at home.
YMMV but the workshop out back will help you cut it to size if required (first cut free). I kept the off cuts and used it as monitor raisers with some 3d printed legs.

If using as a desk topper you'll want to either sand down the edge (its pretty sharp) or get a decent desk pad (I have the nordic one from amazon).

Stock varies store to store, either check via website or using your stock checker of choice,

$6o for a 1.8 x 0.8m desk is pretty decent value if you can accomodate such a huge desk in ur man cave

    • how would you join them?

      • +13

Dinner and a movie first, then see how they go from there.

      1800 is hardly huge

      • +11

        that's what etc.

I've used two different sizes of these as desk toppers with some eBay metal legs over the years. They are really quite nice desk tops. Never had an issue with the Bunnings team cutting it down to whatever custom length I need, although ymmv. I just usually put whichever end was cut against a wall to hide it.

    • That's interesting, when I asked to have these cut at bunnings they said they weren't allowed to cut them

      • +1

That's what I was worried about, as that's what they explain on their website about cutting laminated wood.
But I guess I've just been lucky now. Based in Sydney if that makes any difference.

    • +1

I used this to hold a 50" TV and 2 large heavy speakers (90s models), and it handled that fine, but I did use an extra leg in the back middle of the desk to give it extra support.

    • +4

      Solid enough I thought..

      • +1

        its adequate

i have a inch thick desk and man… when you are moving you will know

Great price. Bought a 1200mm (L) last week for my daughter's study table for $49.

My wife is trying to get into woodwork but alas we have neither the tools, nor the workshop space.

Is there any men's shed type place for women? (in Sydney)

    • +3

Yeah, there’s a place in Coogee,
Just remind her to bring a saw and a hammer with her and ask for the workshop room.

Maybe ask her boyfriend if he knows anywhere.

[sorry. bad joke. I'll see myself out]

    • There is the Woodworkers Association of NSW in Abbotsford. You can use the workshop (after being given instruction on each machine) and they offer courses and lots of advice. https://www.woodworkersnsw.org.au/

  • are these timber panels or laminate?

    • +5

Select grade, kiln-dried timber for stability and a high quality, premium look and feel

Solid acacia hardwood multi-use timber panel

      • thx!

        • Comments below seem to say laminate now btw I don’t know what to believe lol

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: FWIW i've used these panels before and they're laminated wood (i.e wood glued together as opposed to a single slab) rather than like an MDF substrate with a laminate covering. Kinda annoying how ambiguous 'laminated' can be when it comes to this stuff sometimes

  • +2

These are really nice we use acacia 60cm deep ones across the top of IKEA nordli drawers (you can use malm too) for a TV cabinet and it gives a much more premium built-in look

  • Good deal. Out of stock everywhere around me though. Bummer.

  • +1

Just FYI you might get some pushback from Bunnings staff cutting these. I asked and they refused saying it was laminated. Even showed them the description from their own website saying it didn't mention it was laminated but they still refused, they only cut pine. This was Minchinbury and Blacktown Bunnings in NSW.
Ended up getting a cheap Ozito circular saw to cut it myself.

    • +2

      Then return the saw…

Showing now: Specrite multi use pine panels are finger jointed and laminated to provide a stable and high quality finish to you DIY project.

      • +1

Haha I guess the guy that cut mine up broke the rules then

      • Why can you not cut laminated wood?

        • +1

          Blunts their saws

          • +3

@thydzik: The dust is also more hazardous, though you should always wear PPE.

        • +3

Not sure what blades they have on their panel saws but to get a nice cut (without chewing up the edge of the laminate) you generally use a higher tooth count blade like 60T or 80T. Maybe people look at the edge after being cut with a rip blade and say "Nah, don't want that"… ?

    • +9

I think there's some confusion of what laminated means in this case. These panels are laminated in that they are a series of boards glued together. The laminating gives it it's width, while the finger joins give it it's length. This isn't laminated particle board or MDF.

    • Bunnings Adelaide Airport won’t make any cuts on timber smaller than 400mm in any direction anymore.

  • +1

Wish the 600mm was on special.

    Pics of your desk pls

I've bought two of these panels. Both times I spent 20 minutes pulling out each sheet and inspecting to determine the best one - most panels have patches of different colour and texture, laminates of different grain (painful to work and seal the wood when there are sections of cross or angled grain), damage (scrapes, divots), and some have knots or putty fill-ins. Also, the longer, thicker panels are better quality - worth it to buy a longer one and cut down an end with issues to your desired length.

    • +1

I did this, and when I took it home and unwrapped it there was this long mark hidden under the paper packaging. So sneaky. Just made this the bottom of the desk

  • A lot won’t cut as the ‘fingers’ that are joined can get caught in their blade and fly off in any direction. Mentone & Moorabbin won’t cut anymore.

  • I’ve bought about 20 of these. Diff sizes.
Same as above I purchased an ozito circular saw to cut them myself.

A much larger panel (2400mm X 900mm), but a desk I built a couple of years back using one of the mountain gum panels turned out really well.

    https://imgur.com/gallery/IPJyi0b

People have mentioned sanding the edges but I used a quarter round router bit and rounded all the edges over and it turned out really nice.

    • Looks great. I loved Mirrors Edge too.

  • I bought a heap of spotted gum panels on a much better Oz Bargain deal a few years back.
I only got around to lacquering recently
If I was to cut one I'd probably use a hand saw.

Is it just my humble android phone or does anyone else have massive issues in navigating the Bunnings website? Crazy bad lag when clicking through links (if they even work at all), search bar issues, poor intuitive navigation etc? It's absolutely the worst experience.

    • +1

      Have you tried the app?
It’s a better experience even as an iOS user, the only annoying and weird thing is having to go to the website version to see reviews

    • +1

The Android Bunnings app is the same terrible experience.

    • Mobile android is laggy. PC works best

  • +1

FYI, not sure why this says "Excl WA". Website shows them in stock at same price. Also, the unfinished "colour" is $19.

    • Not sure , it was a mod edit. The stock checker did say wa had some.

  • Can I use these outdoor (under sun / wet condition)? Or I must go with marine grade plywood? Thanks.

    • +1

I wouldn't - Its made of small pieces of wood joined together - I can't see it lasting outdoors at all.
