Tasting Notes
The Old Vine Shiraz’s off this Vineyard can be tricky to get your head around, especially when it comes to oak handling.
This is closer to having too much than too little but again it’s far from clear cut and in some ways the graphite and toasty cedar characters it contributes are the perfect counter to the super ripe, plummy fruits and clove.
Re reading this I’d be expecting a wine more confronting than this is, the palate is silky and plush making it, relatively speaking a pretty easy drink… maybe the first line should be in bold.
Vineyard and Winemaking
This was the first vintage post some serious reworking of 120+ yr old vines in our vineyard in McLaren Flat.
The soils are super sandy and the roots tap the water table in most parts so a full canopy gives the fruit plenty of cover and therefore even bunch ripening.
The fruit is handpicked and fermented very lightly in the winery before being matured in separate batches in new and used barrels.
Each barrel is then tasted and the ones deemed the best are blended and bottled under this label.
