The G55 is the cheapest phone with eSIM, 5G and good performance for the price. It now has 4 years of security updates and 2 OS updates, compared to the G54's 1 OS and 3 years security. The useless 2MP macro in the G54 has been replaced with an 8MP ultrawide camera sensor. Charging speed has been upgraded from 15W to 30W.

Motorola has retained many features which are rare in 2025 such as a 3.5mm headphone jack, microSD card slot and a 30W charger and case included.

PB at OW to make it even cheaper.

4GB RAM is a deal breaker

    • +3

It's less than $220. Nothing better at this price.

      • +14

The G54 went for the same price (some deals had it for less than $200). It had E-sim and 8GB RAM, this model seems like a step backward.

          G85 also lost 4GB RAM compared to G84 :/

          • +1

@Dice: The g85 is still usable with its 8 gigs of ram. I know cause I use it, just no serious or lengthy gaming sessions.

I mention this as its $299 on ebay (I don't know where else at this price)and at that it's also a phone worth considering at the sub $300 price range.

            • @sunday9987: Which listing has it for $299?

              • @Manzano: Ah! I apologise for my mistake! It is out of stock now and was for an opened but never used store item. Pity. They had the list price at $299 and there is a coupon for discount of $44.85 as well. Would have made for a great bargain if it was in stock.

I've just done another ebay check and for urban grey units the cost is $358.

And as low as $150 from JB Hifi about 10 months ago

        • Strongly recommend the G54, been my daily since like a week after launch. Someone went to buy on my recommendation, couldn't find it, only the G55 here, went out of my way to say don't bother.

The G54 was/is one of the best budget phones of the current era, even better when 150. Shame the G54 is discontinued.

For those negging this, feel free to share any better options available locally under $220

        • +3

InB4 someone says - spend more & get something better, duh.

          • @WatchNerd: How much more for 8gb with same features like esim and dual sim?

        • Oppo A60?

          • +1

@Laziofogna: That has 4gb RAM, a single rear camera and a 720p screen. Worse than the G55.

    • +9

Saw the 4gb and noped right out. They have 8gb variants but decided to cheap out for the Australian market.

  • +3

But it lost 4GB from the G54. A big no no this.

    • My g54 had 12gb of RAM

  • +7

I'm assuming that the loss of ram is due to the ability to have virtual ram which is a kick in the 🥜 if you as me.

  • +7

motorola think they are apple now

  • +1

Motorola thinks this is 2018…they upgraded the charging speed, but halved the RAM..

  • +14

4GB in 2025 should be illegal

    • +1

Really feels like some Windows XP era shit. "Do I get 32-bit or 64-bit for that extra 700mb of RAM?"

  • +3

which would be the next cheapest 8GB dual sim with esim phone now that G54 are about to be gone.

    • Was wondering the same thing.

I was big on Poco/Xiaomi phones for ages but the combination of unlocking shenanigans and 3g shutdown uncertainty has put me off.

      • -3

Yes I jumped from Xiaomi to Moto a couple of years ago. Also enjoy having the CCP-free peace of mind.

        • +6

CCP free ⁉️ Motorola are made in china , just so you get your mind right.

        • +3

Moto owned by Lenovo which is CCP?

          • +2

@netjock: Motorola Mobility is headquartered in Chicago and traded on the NYSE, so I'd be thinking there's a different level of oversight and regulation. But yes the parent company is Lenovo in China.

        • CCP bought lands here

  • Anyone know Better or worse than a pixel6/7?

    • +5

Those are Google flagship models. This is a budget Motorola

      • Fair enough ,just asking as I know they're a few years old!

  • I guess heaps of tweens, younger teens and older people are perfectly fine with 4gb RAM

  • G54 was cheaper.

  • is 4gb ram enough for a back up phone?

  • This is enough for like youtube/tiktok and maybe discord?

  • Just did a quick check of my Motorola phone. I don't game, just normal apps like YouTube and Chrome, plus NFC for payments. It's sitting at 5.3 GB/8 GB usage right now. So to me the 4 GB models will be swapping alot and that means slowdown. It's just puzzling why a larger RAM chip isn't standard here anymore. This RAM is fine for 3 yrs ago but now 8 GB is pretty much the min. You can get away with 6 GB but still would be swapping fairly quickly.

  • Can anyone give a good comparison to Xiaomi Redmi 14C, or have experience of it (has 8Gb RAM)? Ah, 5 seconds googling - no eSim, no 5G for a start…
