Advice on 3HK eSIM - How Is It Delivered to You?

Has anyone purchased and used one of the travel esims from 3HK?

https://www.three.com.hk/prepaid/DIY/en/offer/travel

I can't find any advice on how these are delivered to you.

Do we need to have a sim service with them and the travel package is added on?

Or do they email us an esim QR code?

I note that the My3 app isn't available on the Australia Play Store so I cannot use the app to make the purchase/setup the service… I'd can only make the purchase via the 3HK website and would need them to send me the esim details (ideally QR code).

Tried contacting 3HK directly but the online chatbot couldn't answer my question nor direct me to a human, and no one has replied to my email as yet so hoping someone who has used them can answer my question.

I am looking at the 365 day, 45Gb Greater Bay Area package. Thanks in advance.

I bought one of these in September. Received an email with QR to activate.
Worked great. Ignore their texts/emails about confirming your identity, that's for activating the voice service and you need a Hong Kong ID for it. Data works without confirming identity.

I used their website to purchase.

    • Cheers bud!

That's good to know that the esim is delivered as a QR code and doesn't need the app. And also that we can ignore the requests to confirm ID. We don't need any voice service… just data. Dad will use this for whatsapp/gmail/banking on his main phone and his secondary phone has a China sim card in it which has data already for wechat/alipay/baidu/amaps.

Mum and Dad plan to take advantage of the 30 day VISA free waiver with China as much as they can so they'll be going back a few times this year. Dad uses 5Gb or less per trip.

The fact that I can get them one esim for the whole year and that the esim also works in HK and Macau for border runs if their trip goes beyond 30 days makes it so much more convenient.

    • Hey mate, just wanted to check if you used the service in HK and the data worked still?

Just asking as on the TravelKon page that resells the 13Gb Global 3HK travel package, it says registration is still required using a passport at the page below for data use in HK and Taiwan:

      • No, in China

        • Cheers bud.

I think I'll need to make a trip to mum and dads to help Dad register his passport with them just to be safe. They're flying into HK first before heading into mainland China and then to Macau for the border run. So he'll need mobile data in HK.

        • We've purchased the esim.

Registration of personal information is super easy using the link included in the online portal… but must be done on the phone so that a camera can be used to take a photo of one's passport.

I've registered the personal info before Dad could even install the esim - lol

They don't fly out for another 3 weeks but we figure being the first time, we may as well get this sorted with a bit of time up our sleeves in case I need to visit Dad in person to do any further tech support. But it seems we're OK.

  • This is unrelated to your original question, but from the link you have there, i found another option -
365-Day Pass - United Kingdom/ USA/ Canada/ Australia/ New Zealand 35GB (Hkd 268) which is about Aud 5 for 2.9GB/mth if it is usable here. I have been looking for a long expiry data plan with small usage only when out and about. Would this work or if there is anything cheaper locally?

I was about to say there's Flip Connect's $4/mth plan with 500Mb data if you were a real low data user and valued a local sim card but that seems to be gone now.

I can't see any data only plans cheaper than 3HK with long expiry.

3HK uses Optus network here I believe. Also note that 5Gb of the 35Gb is for social media use only so if you were thinking of using it for something like solely google maps in the car, you'd only have 30Gb.

If that meets your needs then I can't see why this wouldn't be suitable.

      • Thanks for sharing these useful information! =)

30gb/year should be enough for our use.
