CPAP ResMed Machine Making Some Strange Sound

I've been using my machine for about 3y now. Since mid Dec I've been a bit sick. Started with a respiratory infection and now my throat just goes into spasms and I can't breath for 10-30 seconds a few times a day. It does feel like it's getting better but also doesn't.

Then I noticed my cpap seems to be struggling when I breath. I've used the sleep app to record myself a few times but never has it recorded these sounds from the machine:

I have checked all the connections and everything seems fine. I've tried an old water tank which worked but did start leaking so I just replaced it then and same sound. The only other thing I can think it is is the motor but want to see if someone has had this happen before.

If it were me I would certainly be seeking professional advice on both issues.

Been to the doc multiple times. They say its just an after effect from the infection. I have an app with an ENT to just make sure its all good.

As for Resmed, only noticed it like 2 days ago. Contacting them this morning

I will be paying an ENT $350 for 3 minutes of his time to tell me it's all good

When it comes to health I honestly don't care to waste money. I'll rather waste $xxx and know there's nothing seriously wrong or if its the start of something they can most likely help more. Having this for almost 2 months doesn't feel good.

  • What did Resmed say when you contacted them

    • Will be calling them today to see what they say

Holding my breath to hear what Resmed advises the OP.

Spoke to a very friendly lady. She went through some documentation it seems on troubleshooting on her side. Went through the normal things like the tubing, the humidifier, the mask leaking etc. I think its the motor and she said I should take it into the closed store. I'll give them a call but I might just order a new motor from Amazon. She did say I might have to change the ERP… This doesn't make sense as its the autoset machine

          • @RenVilo: The motor does wear and fail. So if your CPAP machine is making strange noises and is still under warranty, take it to the store you bought it from for service.

Some stores will loan you a machine for free while yours is sent away for service (at least the store i bought it from did). I contacted Resmed when my machine had similar issue, and was told that they would charge me for a loan Machine as i did not buy it from them directly. So i went to the store i bought it from instead.

She did say I might have to change the EPR…

I am guessing you are referring to EPR (Expiratory Pressure Relief). This is not controlled automatically. If you enable EPR in the settings, there are three levels you can choose from. You need select the level to suit your comfort.

            • @Summoner: Yea trying to find my invoice on the machine now :) I'm assuming its a 2y warranty and I think I have it for 3-4y now. Replacing the motor is easy. Just need someone to confirm that's the issue. Only $160 vs what ever they will be charge.

I thought the ERP was done automatically. But if it was fine and it only started to happen recently I would think its not related to this. Isn't this the min/max pressure that the machine pushes out?

              • @RenVilo:

If you go to the settings, you will see the option to adjust the EPR Levels. Below is what each level does.

                ResMed AirSense 10 EPR Levels

                • EPR Level 1: Reduces pressure by 1 cm H2O during exhalation.
                • EPR Level 2: Reduces pressure by 2 cm H2O.
                • EPR Level 3: Offers maximum relief by reducing pressure by 3 cm H2O.

I'm assuming its a 2y warranty and I think I have it for 3-4y now.

If you registered your device under their Sleep Advantage Program, your warranty shoud be 5 Years from the purchase.

I bought mine back in 2021 and i registered it back then, and the email confirmation shows the warranty expires in 2026.

                • @Summoner: Yea, I got mine in July 2021. Don't think I registered with the Sleep program. Mind sharing the email address that confirms the warranty? Did a few searches in my email but no luck so hoping its some strange email account lol

@Summoner: Tx, yea I don't have it. I did reach out to CPAP direct where I bought it and they said its a 5y warranty so I might be in luck. Will try and get it to the reseller place today

              • @RenVilo: I thought about replacing mine myself and then I decided against it.

The motors on Amazon or Aliexpress are not guaranteed to come from Resmed and I don't want to be potentially breathing in any crap or chemicals from some discount knock-off.

If ResMed sold them direct I would have done it but since they don't I didn't.

                • @ZuluOz: haha I was like this with the Filters. A lot cheaper from a place like Temu but also had concerns about the quality. Didn't even think about the motor on it. Well I'm not in a small battle it seems because I bought it from CPAP but a partner place and trying to get the invoice now and seems like its a bit back and forth until it gets sorted out.

@RenVilo: If you bought you Machine from CPAP Direct, you do not need to find your invoice as they have your record.

I bought mine from CPAP Direct, and was never asked for an invoice when i went there for support. It seemed that they were using the machine's serial number to locate my file.

This might be the case for you. Call them and ask if they can locate your file.

                    • @Summoner: Yea just trying to get the invoice to upload to sleepvantage. But I spoke to Resmed who said I can bring it in tomorrow to have a look.

                      • @RenVilo:

If you go with this, I would appreciate it if you could give me an update whether ResMed charges for a loaner machine or not. The previous ResMed staff member I spoke to said that they would, unless the machine was bought directly from ResMed. So i went to CPAP Direct for support.

If they do not charge for the loaner Machine, i prefer to deal with Resmed directly as dealing with some CPAP Direct's agents can be dreadful.

@Summoner: Lady on the phone said if they have to repair it they will give me a loaner for free but they still require credit card details

  • Make a SleepHQ account and upload your data from an sdcard.

Then share your data page (there's a button on the site to do that) and let me have a gander.

    • Done, tx a mil

  • Just an update. So took my machine in, they captured my card details but no charge. They say its just their orocess because people did en up stealing the machines lol.

Was there for just over a week I think. Ohoned me today saying they tested it, there was an issue so they replaced the motor and filters and something else. I'll go get it tomorrow. Very good service from them.
