I've been positively satisfied by the flurry of non-alcoholic beer options coming to market. I never really much cared for the alcohol, I just like the taste and texture. Especially that it can be bought at supermarkets, no need to make a separate purchase at the bottle shop. And, without the additional taxes, much cheaper too.

This is a good option at $6.06/L — curiously made in Italy? 🤔 — but there are others:

But the cheapest of all (and satisfactorily so) is:

Asahi Super Dry 0% Non Alcoholic 6 Pack $12 (Was $15)

    Cheaper here…

    • +4

      That is super wet.

  • +16

    There's roughly $7 excise per 6 pack (5%,330ml) = $28 case.

    Asahi 5% DM/First Choice sells $54 24pk ($13.50/6pk). Asahi 0.0 is sold at First Choice $46 24pk ($11.50/6pk).

Considering normal price for this is $15, and there is no $7 excise.. seems the n/alc customer is the one paying too much actually.

    • +3

Yeah I think it's a rort that non-alc stuff is so expensive when there is no alcohol excise/tax

      • -5

Because alcohol free beer is a relatively new product so there hasn’t been time for people to come to a conclusion about what a proper price for this product is. So the marketers are of course trying to get the most $$ they can by pricing it similar to its closest comparable product which is normal beer.

        • +1

we'd drink it if it was priced sanely. its not that complex

          • @perfectlydark: There are literally large teams of ppl in these massive corporate companies whose only job is to determine what price to sell products at. There are hundreds of variables plugged into complex computer models that gets reviewed and monitored constantly. So yes it is quite complex. It’s not some random guy saying “oh let’s sell it for $5 and see how we go”. Maybe if it was some local business who makes 5 cartons a day then it will be less complex

            • @illusion99: they are doing a pretty bad job in my opinion

              • @perfectlydark: Obviously more people than not are buying it at $15. Market forces dictate that the price will naturally come to an equilibrium between buyers and sellers. Think about it - if nobody was buying it at the price they are selling it for why would they continue to sell it at that price? Unless you think ozbargain users are the majority of buyers.

        • Why is everyone negging? Don’t everyone know that’s what happens in these corporations? Until someone comes with seriously low price competition it’s gona be that way

    • +3

Made in Italy. Kanpai il signore

    • +1

It's a huge rip-off, but a small price to pay if you're avoiding alcohol and hate high-sugar drinks.

      • +1

kombucha isn’t cheap either if people are after brewed non alcoholic drinks.

    • How about you compare with this actual deal, instead of with what a bottle shop charges for it? BWS charges $24.50 for a 6-pack Asahi Super Dry 5%.

      • BWS currently charging $20 as a deal, still a $1 saving for going non-alc (excluding excise). Doesn’t prove non-alc beer is cheap, just that beer at BWS is ridiculously expensive.

        • If you're excluding the excise, why would you expect non-alc to be cheaper? Obviously non-alc beer requires one extra step of processing to remove the alcohol. If $20 is a deal for alc beer, even more so is $12 for non-alc.

          • @wisdomtooth: $20 isn’t a deal, which is why I said it only proves that beer at BWS is ridiculously expensive

      • +1

It seems you don't need alcohol to have inhibited function lmao.

I used bottle shop pricing and can't compare pricing for Woolies because… Woolies don't sell alcohol…

If you want "supermarket" pricing, the last Asahi 5% I got was from a Korean supermarket $11.99/6pk which even further drives in the idea of how expensive n/alc is.

Companies are testing consumers max WTP and even they're surprised with how much suckers will pay for this.

        • Woolies don't sell alcohol…

Your argument was non-alc beer is expensive compared to alc beer net of tax differences. Ok, so just take the price of the similar alc beer from a bottle shop, and compare it with this deal.

the last Asahi 5% I got was from a Korean supermarket $11.99/6pk which even further drives in the idea of how expensive n/alc is.

You mean in Korea?? Or are Korean supermarkets in Australia licensed to sell alcohol? Good deal either way. Did they sell 0% Asahi too? If not, how much would they sell it for; $5/6pk??

          • @wisdomtooth:

Ok, so just take the price of the similar alc beer from a bottle shop, and compare it with this deal.

Hence exactly why I did just that - compared the same store for both products lol, not two entirely different mediums.

You mean in Korea?? Or are Korean supermarkets in Australia licensed to sell alcohol?

Korean mart (in Sydney) - assuming with a liquor license, it's directly imported.

If not, how much would they sell it for; $5/6pk??

Probably $10 because if people saw that they would still buy. My whole point is someone is pocketing the difference somewhere in the chain.

            • @pennypincher98:

Korean mart (in Sydney) - assuming with a liquor license

Is that a new development? I lived 15 years in Sydney till 5 years ago (in Qld since), and never once saw alcohol in marts. I mean, L&GNSW says it can't be done:

If you conduct other business on the premises besides selling alcohol, you must sell alcohol in a separate area. For example: in a supermarket, the alcohol sales area and the cash register must be in a different area to the main part of the supermarket.

              • @wisdomtooth: It's the same kind of premise as ALDI which has sold alcohol in supermarkets for years (in NSW at least). It's a separate little section, but you can buy them both in the one transaction.

                Hardly a groundbreaking idea.

                • @pennypincher98: Yeah, ALDI gets around it saying the 1st register is designated to alcohol. Clearly not the letter of the law 😄

I'm not taking issue with that; it's a pretty foreign concept to me that alcohol can't be sold at supermarkets. It sort of puts Australia on par with Islamic countries and Mormon Utah 😂

Even on sale this is extremely expensive soft drink.

    • I am not sure if it was asked before…

Can I have a "beer cordial"?
      (have to use Sodastream)

    • +2

It's a great alternative to a soft drink and an alcoholic drink.

      • Water is an even greater alternative

        • How so, because it's free?

          • @igerstep: Has even less sugar than soft drink and is also non alcoholic. And you can choose to have it fizzy or not fizzy

            • @illusion99: Fair enough, if you're wanting something that's flavourless.

          • @igerstep: To be accurate, the only "free" water is the one that falls from heaven (though you still need to invest on catchment and tanks).

  • +1

And, without the additional taxes, much cheaper too.

They'll no.doubt raise the price next week with all the other beers and blame Govt excise.

It's fairly profitable for the breweries.
Coles/Liquorland/1stC has probably the best two
    Tinnies & Uberbrau.

who TF spend $$ for this. Even the alcoholic homeless guy at Central Station will refuse to receive this.

    • +7

The alcoholic doesn't want something that's not alcohol?

      • It is alcoholic though. Just very low percentage, as is orange juice and bread

        • if it’s 0.5% or less it’s classed as non alcaholic according to victorian liquor licensing laws.

    • +3

      Many reasons…
      *Health conditions.
*Lifestyle, like during training for an event.
*Designated driver, wanting to have more than 4 drinks without blowing over on the way home.
*Something other than a soft drink that's not full of sugar

    • +2

I drink non-alcoholic beer during the week and find it helps me sleep better, no hangovers, I dont have to worry about being over the limit, helps keep me hitting my calorie goals ect. Tbf ive never been a massive fan of the real ashahi but this tastes very similar.

  • +4

There are some pretty nice non alcoholic beers around, Heaps Normal etc.

But honestly the Coopers stuff is really quite drinkable and a great price compared to everything else.

    • +2

The big brands (eg Heineken, Asahi) have made it near-on impossible to taste the difference between their alcoholic and non-alcoholic beers.

      • +2

Yeah I had a peroni the other day and it was pretty much spot on

    • +1

I like Coopers. I buy others occasionally (Asahi, Nort, etc), but keep coming back to Coopers.

    • +1

Haven't tried Coopers yet. I hate the normal Coopers beer so I never thought to try the no alc version. Then again, I love Asahi but hate the no alc version. Will give Coopers a try.

      • +1

I love Asahi but hate the no alc version.

I can't tell the difference. Coopers is not as dry. Still a lager tho. A bit more hoppy.

  • I kid you not, these still give me that bloated hangover feeling. There might not be alcohol but there is something in there that’s really bothering me much better for the day after.

    • +1

Do you get the same bloaty feeling drinking a gluten free beer?

      • Ahh, no I eat gluten often with no issues at all! Good thinking though, maybe it is alrrgies…

    • +1

      Weird neggers…

It may be psychological, or maybe it ferments in the gut, but even 0.0% makes me a little light headed. I stopped drinking alcohol 5 years ago, though, so I'm probably more sensitive.

      • Yeah people are weird. Also I did trail off and distracted while typing the end of the sentence there I think. I meant to write “ there is something in there that’s really bothering me as much as alcohol for the day after.”

Same here! Glad to hear I am not the only one! I never drank much so maybe as you said, something we are sensitive or psychological. Who knows at this point…

    • +1

I have had no issues with non-alc beer.

But I did have a bottle of non-alc wine a few months ago that gave me the worst hangover ever. It felt way worse than any alcohol hangover I've ever had. I never felt tipsy/drunk during or after drinking it - it was just the hangover.

      So yeah, I believe you.

  • -3

What's the point 😂 disgusting without the benefits, just get a drink you'd actually enjoy in this case.

    • +1

I just like the taste and texture.

  • +1

This tastes like most other terrible ultra low alc/no alc beers. Tastes of yeast and molasses.

Only ones I have found that taste actually good are Heaps Normal and Bentspoke.

    • Garage Project do a really good one but you’d get an absolute deluge of negs if you told anybody here how much it costs

    • It pays off not being a beer buff; but for the alcohol, I can't tell them apart 😅

And I'm not the only one!

    • These type of "beers" are pointless.

      • for whom the point of drinking is getting drunk…

        • The price to pay for getting into that state… is drinking beer.

          • @smartProverble: To me, getting drunk was the price to pay for the pleasure of savouring beer. With that out of the way, it's an extra bonus beside the absence of excise tax, and the convenience of buying it at grocery store.

  • -2

This is basically just unhealthy water.
I just drink water, in particular sparkling when I'm not having a real beer.
