  • hmm, says $59 now, anyone else seeing that?!

    • +4

      It adjusts at checkout.

  • The last one I bought lasted only 12 months, but at this price, disposable works.

  • -1

    This is so unnecessarily big.

    • +6

      Sorry, I can't help it

    • Unfortunately she did not say that.

    • +1

      she never said that.

    • That's not what she said.

  • How hot?

  • +1

Power consumption to keep this thing at temp would be astronomical no? It's basically an uninsulated overpowered hot water system.

    • Yes but unlike hot water systems it’s generally not being left in 24/7.

They are either being used for functions/events otherwise they can controlled with a timer.

    • -2

At 2kW it’s more like an underpowered hot water system.

      • 2kW for 10L…most domestic HWS (250-300L) are about 3.6kW.

        • -2

yep a normal system is almost double the size of this one

      • No it's not, 300l tank only has 4.8kw elements at best. And 1800w elements are not unheard of. a 3 phase household couldn't even be enough to power your 'properly powered' system.

        • -3

Exactly… way bigger than this… totally undersized for a hot water system

    • In the context of electricity usage, it would be large, but in terms of $ it would be like a dollar or two per day

      • -1

So around $500/year to run. From a bargain perspective it would certainly make sense to spend more on an insulated version and reduce running costs…

      • No chance, do you have number to back up your claims? A fully insulated hot water system easily lose 50c a day on heat loss, and it only goes up to 60-70 degrees. Higher temp and piss poor insulation mean this thing could easily lose >10kwh per day if leave on and not used. I'd say $5 a day to be realistic figure.

        • I expect the running estimates above would be for using it at morning/afternoon tea, not 24/7.

  • +1

don't need one right now but ordered one anyway.

  • +2

    Thanks, bought one.

Maybe too large, but buy first. $80 elsewhere, looks to be a genuine bargain.

  • Isn't it better to get this or get a instant hot water dispenser?

    • Completely different products for different use cases.

Instant hot water requires installation and ongoing maintenance (i.e. filters). Much higher initial cost.

This one is cheaper, installation free, and most importantly portable.

    • For household use, 100% especially if you are just making 1 or 2 cups at a time throughout the day.

I used to have a Tefal Quick Cup and now I'm using an Aldi one (Ambiano) and it's great.

I still have a kettle for entertaining for a large dinner or party or something otherwise people will be waiting a while, filling up one cup at a time.

I think this type of urn that OP posted is more for a small office or community venue. You can run this at home but it would be mighty wasteful than just boiling what you need in a kettle.

  • It's not boiling 10L of water in two minutes with 2000W. So if you leave this on all day how much energy would it use. ChatGPT says:

Final Answer: The urn could use around 10.5 kWh over 24 hours.
Cost estimation: If electricity costs 40c/kWh, the urn running for 24 hours would cost about $4.20 per day.

That's assuming the whole 10L is kept at boiled temperature but perhaps this urn uses some kind of zoned heating, so it could use even less energy than that.

  • Urn of shadows.

    • With the power usage its closer to a Spirit Vessel

  • +2

Just to point out this is intended for events, catering, limited time use, i.e. running for 2-3 hours max.

If you want to plug it in all day at home, you would want something with better insulation.

  • Can you use this for keeping tea for events or water only?

    • Don't see why not, but it's going to stain, either quickly clean it after use or use it permanently for tea.

  • Price changed?

  • Initial cost: lower. Running cost: way higher.

  • +2

When I zoom in on the temperature knob I see this goes to 110 degrees C - now that's impressive!!!!

    • Probably temperature of the heating element.

  • +1

Is the plural Nescafe 43s or Nescafes 43?

  • I mean we won WW2 on these things

  • -1

Hmmm is the lid pressure sealed?

    • Wouldn't think so, it's not insulated.

  • Home hot water is 50-60 degree (tho might not be for drinking?) Getting hot water ready for everyone in the morning instead of a big family sharing a single kettle is not bad idea. Not sure if it's easy to empty/clean the tank。

    • It's about 30cm in diameter, 41cm tall. It's going to be quite prominent on the counter.

  • Its easy to spend money while you earn
