Coles Has Reduced Hours on Roast Chicken Guarantee

Has anyone noticed Coles has again reduced the hours on their roast chicken guarantee?

It was initially valid until the store closed, then it was valid until 8pm as recently as December. It's now been reduced to 6pm.

It's a little annoying, those chickens are super handy for a rushed family dinner on a weeknight.
The fact it's only valid until 6pm means there's no incentive for Coles to keep them in stock beyond then. I got there at 6:01 last night, empty shelves and was told it's always been a 6pm cutoff, which I know for a fact is incorrect. Not sure if different stores have different cutoff limits now?

Haven't noticed that, will check next visit, but I have noticed them start to remove the fruit and veg (especially chilled stuff like lettuce and cut watermelon) at around 8PM when the store closes at 10PM… Might just be my local store though.

So there is an agenda to not have late night chookens.
I went in last week ~6:30 to both the local Coles and Woolies and the warmers were empty and turned off. Had to settle for the dirty bird.

They trying to fix the egg shortage …

    • Are you saying that the chicken came first?

At the end of the day, they are trying to reduce waste. Having chickens sit till close and being tossed out, isn't good for anyone.

At Coles, the leftover chickens are shredded, chilled and sold as shredded chicken in the deli meat section the next day they aren't thrown out…

      • so its not rec to have it out heated for 4 hours (according to policy) but ok to shred the next day ?

        • +1

They're shredded while hot, spread on trays and put in the cold room to bring the temp down as quickly as possible. There's an official policy that's meant to be followed to make sure it's safe. (not saying every store follows it correctly.)

I don't think they are, as they haven't been stored at the correct temperatures etc. I believe the chicken used for the shredded meat are cooked for this purpose, and chilled straight away.

The chickens can only be in the hot box/warmer for a certain period of time, before they have to be tossed out. So I can't see them staying in the warmer for hours on end, then being totally ok to used in the deli the next day as cold chicken.

They have a very defined process, after a bbq chicken reaches it's time limit in the warmer, it's removed then broken down/shredded immediately, spread on large trays and refrigerated to bring it down to safe temp ASAP. (Source: 10+ years at Coles)

    • If they marked them down to half price or less in the last hour of trade there would be no waste.

      • They do! I still see chickens marked down. Generally these are the ones left in the hot box/warmer for too long.

The point is, they don't want 10 chickens being marked down at the end of the day as they don't make money on them.

so better to throw them away instead of marked down ?

          • +1

@capslock janitor: JimmyF's point is about them not roasting new chickens after 6pm.

We're talking about not having road chickens till closing and the guarantee ending at 6pm now.

From the stores point of view, they don't make much money on the roast chicken, these are mostly a loss leader to get you in the door to buy other stuff. So marking them down generally means a loss, tossing them out is a total loss.

So having 10 chickens at closing that are marked down or tossed out costs them money, compared to having no chickens at all.

At the end of the day, they are trying to reduce waste. cut costs and increase profits.

And? They are a for profit organisation.

        • And, it has nothing to do with reducing waste.

          • +5

@OzzyBrak: Reducing waste reduces costs which increases profits. A win/win.

            • @try2bhelpful: If that were true we wouldn't have almost everything in a supermarket wrapped in single use plastic.

              • @OzzyBrak: I will give you a hell yes on that one. Where possible I refuse to buy things that are over packaged.

  • 6pm is too early for my chicken run.

but good to see they are stickering this guarantee there

  • Considered complaining to the store or head office? Not a supermarket worker and never have been, but it could just be a dumb decision by whatever manager is on duty, assuming they have this level of autonomy.

Find it hard to believe you’re the only customer wanting a chook after 6pm bang on 6pm.

Company introduces offer. Offer does not go as expected. Company modifies offer. People complain about losing something they never really had on the first place. It’s the cycle of life.

The chickens used to do evening shift but now they cluck-off early.
