Synology DS220+ RAM Upgrade to 16GB

hey all

I have Synology nas ds220+, thinking of upgrading the ram to 16gb, reading on Redditt that some people have done it and it works fine for them but most of the comments are old. Keen to know if anyone as DS220+ running on 16GB, if so which exact made and model of RAM ( a link would be appreciated)

thanks

  • if works before most likely to be work as well, make sure you need 16, i think 8gb is plenty for most users
check the exact spec of the ram and then buy any ram with same spec doesnt matter what brand even second hand will work (and obviously check how many slots are free on your nas). also i think there is a big google spreadsheet where people share which ram is suitable for what, i cant remember could be for something else not NAS

I recently upgraded my desktops ram. Bought 4 x 8gb ram from aliexpress via choice products. It was ~$9 each delivered. Works & inexpensive.

    • A desktop upgrade is a bit different to a NAS.

      • Oh yes, i understand that. More so pointing out inexpensive RAM options from aliexpress

  • Only took me one google to find the specs for the product. And see right there in it that RAM in it is 4GB DDR4-2666 non-ECC unbuffered SODIMMs. There's even a picture.

That leaves the only question being, would it recognise and use larger capacity SODIMMs. Its not as if its running a lot of apps, is it, that it needs lots of RAM.

Spoke to Keith from Ram City, He suggested following Crucial one. I've placed the order and shall have it in few days.
Leaving the link here, just in case anyone needs it in future - https://www.ramcity.com.au/products/ddr4-2666-sodimm-ct16g4s…

    • thanks for that ! this triggered me to check for my DS920+ also

  • I think the DS220+ only officially supports 6 GB RAM. (The 2 GB it comes with, and a single 4 GB SIMM.)

Further, the processor (Celeron J4045) only officially supports 8 GB RAM.

That said, it is possible 2 x 8 GB might work. I have previously upgraded Synology units to beyond their recommended specs. But be aware that things may go south for you.

Also… what is your use case scenario? Are you running several dockers/VMs? Because, for basic file storage/streaming I don't think you will notice any difference in performance going from 2 GB to even 16 GB (if it works).

    • Yes, I will be setting up 2 VMs and few dockers

OK. A lot of work for a Celeron J4045! Not saying it won't work, but… whew… the poor little CPU. 😅

I hope the extra RAM works for you. As I said, it is beyond Synology specs for that model.

Let us know how it goes.

  • I upgraded my DS923+ to 32GB with no issues once I was sure that I could order the specific RAM module that would work as not all do.

I use this guide. There may be others. Was updated in 2023.
