New laws about mobile phone holders in cars

The new laws brought in recently I think stated that you can't use a home made mobile phone holder in the car, it has to be one specifically for your phone.

Does that mean that this - http://www.shoppingsquare.com.au/product.php?id=399844 wouldn't be legal?

It is for several different ones so that mean legally not acceptable?

$5.95 + $1 postage would be great (unless you've come across something elsewhere) - but not much point if it's still not legal.

Thanks for your thoughts

The law states it must be in a cradle. Nothing about a branded or specific one to fit. They are all basically the same design with a couple of ratchet prongs on the side to fit any phone and the one you linked to is fine.

Assuming you are from QLD(Brisbane from your account details).

All three of the pictures are fine.

For NSWers, only the last configuration is fine; as the first two have to be stuck on the windshield; which obscures the view of the driver. Thus has to be fitted onto the air con

    • There is no offence for eating and drinking while driving.

i'm not sure if that is right

      • Pretty sure it's right, saw a policeman the other day drinking a cup of coffee, however the lights were red, so we were at a halt.
Also I believe it is not illegal to drive to 1/no hands

        • it's certainly an offence to drive with no hands. you need to keep one hand on the wheel at all times. maybe it's eating with both hands at the same time that is an offence

yeah, but the cops do whatever they want. i've seen them doing illegal u-turns to pull into a 7-eleven

Most people have the cradle mounted to the windscreen which when placed correctly would not obscure vision. I have listened to lots of information regarding the new laws, but have never heard anybody say it must be mounted in the vent.

  • Thanks all for clarifying that for me.
    So… worth getting this one?

    • Could also try this one, if you want the vent style holder.

      • I have both variations of the phone holders

The long one with the suction cup is very sturdy, however weve may be too long(i fixed this by breaking off the middle metal piece and attaching the two other parts via a string)

The air con vent one is hard to use for me, as it's hard to get in/out of the vents.
However, if you plan to leave it on the car permanently, it's good. It's also adjustable to first most phones
